International Conference: Micro Perspectives for Decentralised Energy Supply (MES) 2015

The Microenergy Systems Research Group at the Technische Universität Berlin, the BMS College of Engineering in Bangalore and the Berkeley Rural Energy Group at UC Berkeley, California, will jointly organize the MES 2015 Conference, an interdisciplinary and interactive forum for academics and experts to discuss the latest research and current trends in the field of decentralised energy supply.

The conference will take place in Bangalore, India, on April, 23-25 2015. Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri (Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC and head of TERI, The Energy and Resources Institute) will be the keynote speaker at the conference.

Business Plan Competition

As a pre-event to the conference, MicroEnergy International (MEI), the Energy for All Initiative and the Microenergy Systems Research Group (MES) have jointly organized a business plan competition. The objective of the business plan competition is to find and showcase brilliant ideas from across the world, working towards finding innovative and sustainable solutions and projects in the sphere of the energy access challenge, which are financially viable, socially responsible and environmentally beneficial.

Converting Waste Agricultural Biomass to Energy in Asia

Every year, about 5 billion metric tons of agricultural biomass is wasted all around the world. Among the continents Africa, Asia and South America; Asia itself accounts for almost 77% of the total biomass wasted. Thus, to tackle this problem, the UN Environment Program’s (UNEP) International Environment Technology Centre (IETC) has conducted a number of projects that aim at converting waste agricultural biomass into energy and assessing the potential for resource conservation as well as greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction in Asia.

The projects range from designing a gasifier in the Philippines to building an anaerobic digestion system in Pakistan.

Solar Powered Reading Lamps in Peru

The Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) - supported initiative, ‘Digital Diesel: Pay as You Go Financing for Solar Energy in Rural Peru’ is providing affordable solar energy to rural Peru.

Under this project, the Colorado based social enterprise PowerMundo and diviPower have worked together to develop a cell phone application. This application allows its users to pay for the solar lamps in small weekly amounts rather than paying all upfront and thus reduces the financial burden on the users.

Household Air Pollution Intervention Tool (HAPIT)

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley with support from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Global Alliance, have developed a simple, web-based tool called Household Air Pollution Intervention Tool (HAPIT).

HAPIT provides easy to use impact comparisons of clean cooking options on human health by combining data calculations from several sources. It also derives a simple cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit estimate of clean cooking options, based on the World Health Organization WHO-CHOICE methods.

Watch a webinar about the tool here.

Diversification of Energy Supply: Prospects for Emerging Energy Sources

In this report, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has highlighted the current and future prospect of wind energy, photovoltaic (PV) and unconventional gas in Asia.

According to the report, Asia is currently replacing Europe as the world’s main PV market with 44% of the world’s PV demand coming from Asia. Thus the declining solar price could have immense implications for Asia. Regarding the wind energy, the report argues that although the deployment is expanding, wind energy still has many challenges such as high levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and capital costs.
