Training's Back!

We're BACK!

What a fantastic start to the 2016 season last Wednesday with a record number of umpires at training. We have been so inundated with new registrations that we have decided we are going to need a third coach for our 1-umpire group.

For those of you on our list in 2015 who haven't yet re-registered go to our website and navigate through the tabs at the top to the UMPIRES area. There is a Frequently Asked Questions page which answers the 101 questions every umpire asks, and a REGISTER page where you can (you guessed it) register to umpire with us this season.

Training now continues every Wednesday from 4.45-6.00pm. In answer to all those people worried about whether turning up a bit late is a problem, the answer is that any training is better than none - especially early in the season, and whilst we obviously don't want everyone turning up late, for the few who have spoken to us about it, and explained that they can't get there earlier due to other commitments it's not a problem.

Remember to dress comfortably for training, bring a whistle and water - and when it's hot remember to pop on sun screen and maybe even a hat.

Finally - make sure you read through to the end of our newsletter to read about our new Head Coach for 2016.

REGISTER NOW using this link if you haven't already!

WILL MURRAY Tribute Match

Many of you will have heard or seen the sad news about one of the SMJFL's finest young players Will Murray. Will suffered a severe neck injury some time ago, rendering him a quadriplegic, and the football community is rallying around to help his family in this very difficult time.

One of the initiatives was that the AFL has agreed to a match to be played at Etihad Stadium on the 10th March as a curtain raiser to the Richmond v Port Adelaide NAB Challenge match. The SMJFL has been asked to provide umpires and the match ball for this game.

I was thrilled that so many of our umpires volunteered to do this match, unfortunately we couldn't fit them all into the squad, but congratulations to the 9 (3 x field, 4 x boundary & 2 x goal) umpires who were selected. We'll tell you who they all are next week - stay tuned!
We have had many enquiries about uniform sales. Please be patient as the league has signed a new partner in BLK who will be supplying us with uniforms for at least the next 5 seasons. We'd rather get it right than do a rush job, and have recently signed off on the artwork for the new gear, and placed an order. We will let you know as soon as it is available to order. BLK also supply the AFL, so we'll be looking the same as theAFL umpires.
Who's Who in the ZOO!

Spotlight on SAM...

Sam Bridges is our Head Coach for 2016. The job of Head Coach is a vital one in our organisation. Sam is responsible for sourcing the rest of the coaching team, coming up with coaching plans for each session, and ensuring the whole team is "on the same page" as far as direction goes.

Sam has been umpiring for over 10 years, and despite his youthful exterior has an extensive history of umpiring and coaching behind him. He is a Level 2 accredited umpire, and Level 1 accredited Umpire Coach. Like all of our coaches he recently attended the State Umpire Coach Conference to stay up to date with all the latest techniques.

The last 5 years he has been umpiring both Senior (with the SFNL) and Junior (SMJFL) games, with 4 senior Grand Finals to his credit. His Umpiring highlight so far has been selection to Umpire two Division 1 Senior Grand Finals.

His coaching career began 5 years ago beginning with 1-umpire, before moving to 2-umpire coaching, and now Head Coach, with many ideas of his own as to the direction our Umpiring group will take.

We will be holding an information evening at training one night, but are waiting for a few sessions in as there are many umpires wanting to participate who are still heavily involved in their summer sporting pursuits. Once these are finished for most umpires we will explain all about Schedula, uniform etc.

We are still in the process of finalising the Umpires Handbook for 2016 whoch will be distributed electronically so as not to waste paper. As soon as it's available for download we will tell you, but in the meantime the 2015 edition is still up on the website.
