Dear ODs

It's probably just me but am I the only one feeling that January was cancelled, so quickly did we arrive at February?

The year seems to have got off to a hectic start and I have had fun meeting several ODs in, around and out of town. I was very pleased to have had lunch (and dinner) with Mark Charnock (O, 1962) and Margie in Cape Town and Charles McGregor (F, 1969), all in Cape Town for their annual battery recharge.

Chris Anderson, Tom Baigrie and Trevor Torrington (all F, 1978) dragged me out willingly to supper at a very charming pub very close to Tom's home and miles from all of ours. We spent a very amusing evening comparing notes on our respective maturation processes and significant girlfriends who helped along the way.

And then on the last Thursday of last month a few of us met at The King's Arms in Shepherd Market for a few drinks and two Canadian ladies who seemed quite taken with Natale Labia's charm. Whether the two return for this month's drinks (see date and venue above) only Natale can tell. In the picture to the left are: me (F, 1973), Chris Leach (S, 2008), Adam Franke-Matthecka (F, 2002), Natale Labia (S, 2001) Martin Calder (B, 1991) and Peter Arthur (W, 1965) (and apologies for the quality of the photo).

We welcome Michael and Chris Leach (S, 2008 - yes they're twins) who have just arrived in London from Cape Town.

Congratulations go to Nick Koster (F, 2007, left) who has been accepted onto the M.Sc programme at Cambridge to read environmental science. He tells me he has not quite given up rugby so Bristol may still have a chance in this year's Club Championships. He is one of many ODs who have embarked on Masters' degrees at Cambridge and we wish him well, including Peter Beare (M, 2011) who is there reading for a Chemical Engineering Masters.

The UK ODU is trying to offer a variety of events and functions which will attract the widest range of ODs. Not all will appeal to everyone and even if they did, no one will have the time or inclination to attend everything. But if the choices seem to exclude you, please do let me have your suggestions as to what you might find interesting. And if you do find one or two to your taste, please support them where you can. As always, while fun and camaraderie underpin what we do, the important objective is for you to get to know as many ODs as possible and strengthen your networks.

In the Market Place and Job Shop blocks below, please endeavour to support your fellow ODs where possible. And if you would like to use this area, please let me know. As an OD said to me the other day, it's always good to keep what we can offer in the "family".

Any comments/ideas are always gratefully received - as are your news and pictures.

Kind regards

Nicky Bicket
By popular demand, David Jordan (W, 1962, left) a certified London Blue-Badge Guide, will be leading another two walking tours in London for ODs, their families and friends. Those on David's tour of Hampstead Heath last year will testify to his passion, energy and knowledge. These are not to be missed - and there is, thanks to David's generosity, no charge.

The first, on Saturday May 20th, will be a walk around the City of London, with, optionally, a tour of St Paul's at the end.

The second, on Saturday 7th October, is a guided tour of the National Gallery. David says, "My heart always breaks for the poor souls that I see traipsing around through all those boring grand pictures without really knowing what to look for, not knowing which are the Top Ten!  And certainly not knowing the stories that make the pictures come alive."

Both tours will, naturally, end with a visit to a local refreshment station

If you are interested, in one or both, register your interest HERE. This doesn't commit you, but helps with the planning.
