BASIL BEY
6 April 1936 - 10 November 2016
Teacher, Rugby Coach and Lover of Life
R.I.P.
Dear ODs

Last week we said goodbye to Basil Bey who after over 40 years' service to Bishops and the ODU passed away after a long battle with cancer. Rugby player or not, there are very few boys who knew Basil who would not have been touched by his unique and caring philosophy and huge heart, sometimes, it has to be admitted, concealed behind a somewhat gruff and gnarled exterior.

As the ODU we remember him with affection and gratitude for his tremendous contribution to Bishops in so many spheres and will will watch with interest the impact he has on The Angels' 1st XV as he shapes them into a truly heavenly rugby machine.

On a happier note, congratulations go to the 1996 UK ODs who celebrated 20 years of liberation, adventure and success. The photo below shows 15 of them posing Akkersdyk-style to record the occasion.

Back: Michael Starke, Richard Wynne, Francis Eliot, Gareth Lloyd, Mervyn George, James Roberts and Guy Morgan
Front: Virgil Parenzee, Jeffrey Friedlander, Jan van Zyl Smit, Henry Whittaker, Michael van Rooyen, Anderw Loynes, David Riches and Philip Rowe.

Last month I reported that Alex Price (M, 2008) and Stefan Swanepoel (M, 2008) climbed Kilimanjaro to to raise money for the Anak-Tnk Foundation & the Thokozani Youth Centre in Cape Town. A short high-energy video of their achievement can be seen HERE. Well done to them and to Doug Mallett (M, 2007) who completed the Arch-to-Arc epic for the Yabonga Charity.

Lastly, after 20 years of service, Wendy van Heerden, PA to the Principal, Guy Pearson and four before him, is retiring. Among many other things, Wendy has played a crucial role as a link between the ODU and the School and has been a particular help to me 6,000 miles form the mothership. We thank her for her fantastic service to Bishops and support for the ODU and wish her a long and happy retirement - and many more grandchildren.

Kindest regards

Nicky Bicket
The UK ODU year-end drinks reception is being hosted by Hamish Sinclair (S, 1992) at Stonehage Fleming where he is a Partner. The function is on Thursday 1st December from 6.30pm-9.30pm. If you like to come along (£10pp all in) please RSVP HERE
Cross Country
Saturday 17th December

The annual Thames Hare & Hounds Alumni cross-country race taking place on and around the Wimbledon Common is the 17th December at 2.30pm. The 8km race involves over 35 alumni associations and while the emphasis is on fun, winning a category or two wouldn't be a disgrace either. Family and friends are very welcome to run (although won't count towards the results). To go for gold, James Deane (B, 1990) our athlete-in-residence is the man to contact and this can be done by clicking HERE

FINANCIAL SERVICES / ASSET MANAGERS

Last month I canvased for ODs interested in the Financial Services industry, especially but not exclusively investment management. There has been a good response and I will be arranging an informal get-together on 31st January. I'll be writing to all those who have responded with more details, and anyone else who would like to be kept informed of this group and its functions should register their interest HERE. It will be a great opportunity to meet with like-minded ODs and occasionally with other UK schools' alumni and guest gurus.
OD Mentoring continues apace and the number of young ODs all over the world who are benefiting from the generous encouragement, advice and support of their Mentors is growing.
