Dear ODs

The OD Union is trying to broaden its purpose to include a programme of mentoring and support for fellow ODs. Social and sporting events will always be important and fun and we will always have them. However, in these days when cyber-connectedness and global marketplaces make it so much easier for ODs to stay in touch outside of the ODU structures, we are challenged to go beyond social objectives and make our existence and purpose even more meaningful, relevant and valuable.

In this thinking, we are in line with emerging practice from an increasing number of UK public schools' alumni associations who are building among their old boys and girls enthusiastic, influential and accessible teams of mentors.

For the ODU, being a mentor means giving a small amount of one's time once in a while to assist another OD who could benefit from your guidance and interest. This could be in your professional area of expertise, or, through your own connections, access to other networks. Or just general support. All 800+ members of the UK OD branch have something of value to pass on.
Many ODs are new to the UK (or are considering coming here) and some would benefit from an avuncular OD arm around the shoulder as they begin to make their way forward here. ODs helping ODs will provide a safe and familiar context for ODs in need of your encouragement as a mentor. There is no minimum or maximum age for mentors. If you can and want to be of help to other ODs, that's more than enough.

The objectives of our scheme are support and advice, not job offers, internships or work placements. This will be made clear to ODs seeking help. We are not running a Job Centre.

Gratifyingly, a great many ODs have already expressed their enthusiasm and support for this initiative.  They see this as a way of strengthening the OD Network, connecting with Bishops, giving back and generally being able to "look after one's own". I'm hoping that this enthusiasm will now be translated into active involvement. By letting me have your data via this information form, I'll be able to build the mentor panel and get the programme up and running.

The basic process will be that when ODs contact me for support - and this doesn't happen that often - I will speak to a mentor who seems best placed to provide it. I'll agree with the mentor how he would like to be contacted by the OD and then leave it up to the OD wanting assistance to be in touch. My commitment is not to overburden mentors, and if you feel you're being exploited, then you need only say so.

Your participation - and you are free to opt out at any time - would be very much appreciated, not only by the ODU but also by ODs who will benefit and flourish because of the guidance and support they get from you.  I think it provides ODs with a huge amount of value which they can only access because they, like  you, are ODs. And, of course, by supporting ODs, we promote Bishops. And, as the Old Tonbridgian Society secretary observed to me recently, it should come as no surprise that the mentor feels every bit as fulfilled as the mentee.

The ODU Committee in Cape Town are watching our efforts with interest and based on our experiences are likely to launch their own (i.e. South African) programme which hopefully in time will be extended globally.

So, if you'd like to be part of this OD Mentoring project - and I do hope very much you will - please click HERE to supply some supporting information about yourself.

With very kind regards
