SENIOR OD LUNCH

The venerable Carlton Club was the venue for the Senior OD Lunch last month hosted by Raymond Ackerman (S, 1948) the ODU President seen on the right. 10 ODs gathered for pre-lunch drinks in the Drawing Room before moving into the Disraeli Room for a splendid lunch and insightful talk from Raymond. The feedback has been very positive. This is a format which will
be repeated. Hopefully, ODs who prefer getting together in more intimate environment will be able to attend. The picture to the left is of John Parker-Wood (G, 1960), Peter Arthur (W, 1965) and Mike Taylor (G, 1959). Other ODs present were: Simon Arnold (F, 1951), Tim Shaw (F, 1952), Jeremy Ouvry (F, 1953), Miles Maskell (O, 1953), Denis Christie, F, 1971) and Nicky Bicket (F, 1973). Our thanks go to Anthony Record, MBE (S, 1956) who couldn't be with us but who very kindly made the Club available to us. (More photos of the lunch can be viewed HERE)
The UK branch of the ODU extends its congratulations to the Bishops Headmaster, Guy Pearson, on the extension of his contract until the end of 2019. We look forward to hearing him share his vision for the School when he speaks to us at our OD Dinner in London on 1st July.
The ODU invites ODs for drinks at Ye Olde Mitre (1 Ely Place, EC1N 6SJ) on Wednesday 24th February from 6-8pm. No RSVPs necessary.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

More good news flows out of Bishops. In particular, we congratulate Angus Thring who is one of only nine pupils to be selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious Global Science Fair, Intel ISEF 2016, in Phoenix Arizona later this year. For more on what's happening inside the School, click HERE.

Earlier this month the Chairman of the College Council announced the appointment of three new Council members as well as the extension of the Headmaster's contract. The full message can be read HERE.
LUNCH WITH TONY LITTLE

I am very pleased to be able to tell you that Tony Little, the recently-retired headmaster of Eton, has accepted our invitation to speak at an OD lunch in October. The date will be advised in the March newsletter. Places will be limited so I would encourage you - if you are keen to attend - to respond as soon as the RSVPs open.

MUSIC

The Old Haileyburians invite ODs, families and friends to a concert on Thursday 3rd March put on by the music students of Haileybury and the Haileybury Chamber Choir. The concert is being held at St James's Church, 197 Piccadilly. It starts at 7.30pm. ODs and their guests are welcome to join me at The Red Lion (2, Duke of York Street, SW1Y 6JP) just around the corner from the church  from 6.30pm and then again after the concert. The programme includes:
  • J.S. Bach - Lutheran Mass in G minor
  • Haydn - Symphony No. 104 in D major (London)
  • Rachmaninov - Sonata for Cello and Piano (second movement)
  • Schubert - Mass No. 2 in G major
Entrance is free and reservations are not required
GOLF

We have two inter-alumni association Golf matches already confirmed for this year. The first is the Senior OD Team vs the Old Cranleighans which is taking place on Thursday May 12th at the iconic Walton Heath Club in Surrey. Richard Duck (G, 1964) is trying to augment the numbers so any golf-playing OD who matriculated in 1968 or earlier who is keen to turn out should RSVP by clicking HERE. The picture above, taken at the last Senior outing last year, shows (back): Mike Taylor (G, 1959), Peter Arthur (W, 1965), Robert Simpson (S, 1968), Bobby Trew (F, 1952) and Richard Duck. Seated is John Wyatt (W, 1963).

The second match is the ODs vs the Old Tonbridgians which tees off on Sunday 10th July at the RAC, also in Surrey. Our intrepid captain, Alex Price (M, 2008) tells me that the side is up to capacity, but he is always keen to have other ODs in reserve in case of drop-outs and also for future games. If you would like Alex to put you on the list (and so be in the frame for further games) please email him by clicking HERE.
