Dear ODs

We have a new OD badge, seen above in the header. This is now in official service. I am sure we'll be hearing from the ODU Committee about the thinking behind the change and how it will impact existing accessories and branding.

This newsletter is mainly about events, some looming and others a little more distant. In particular, our end-of-year drinks in the House of Lords (also see below) is a month away and it would be lovely to see as many ODs and their spouses/partners as possible. I still waiting to hear from the House of Lords about a guided tour of the Houses towards the end of the evening. The cost of the evening includes all drinks and canapés (and tour).
Numbers are rising fast for our end-of-year drinks for ODs and partners on Friday12th December, hosted by Anthony St John in the House of Lords. Entrance to the House is by formal invitation only which I'll send to you once you've registered here
The ODU has been invited by the Oxford and Cambridge Rugby Clubs to attend their annual match (The Varsity Match) at Twickenham on 11th December. The Universities will use the occasion to mark the deaths of the 55 Rugby Blues who died in WW1. Three ODs are amongst that number and we shall be laying a wreath - together with other schools - in their honour. To find out more about which schools are represented, the 3 ODs, and the complete list of fallen ODs, click here.
23 January 2015
Raymond Ackerman (S, 1948), the ODU President, will be our guest of honour at a Senior OD lunch to be held on Friday 23rd January 2015 at the RAF Club in London. All ODs 55 and older are invited to join him in what is a new format for the ODU. If well supported, I shall be arranging further lunches for Senior ODs.  Please RSVP by clicking here. Note this is for ODs only (i.e. unfortunately spouses and partners are not included this time).

Raymond is also addressing the South African Chamber of Commerce (UK). This will take place at Deloittes, New Street Square, London EC4A 3BZ on Wednesday 28th January. ODs interesting attending must please let me have their names by clicking here. The talk starts at 6.30pm with drinks and canapés after. There is no charge
Congratulations to Nizaam Carr (M, 2009), left, on being selected fothe Springbok Rugby Squad to tour the UK. Those watching the game against England on Saturday 15th November will hopefully have a chance to see him in action.

Sticking with rugby, and almost beyond belief, some may remember that in 1974 White House won the inter-house cup. Such rarities are the stuff of legends and legends are to be celebrated. Displaying the same disciplined preparation that saw off the competition 40 years ago, 5 of those mighty warriors met in London to commence the warm up ahead of their full-team reunion (covered in the weekly OD newsletter on the 7th November) earlier this month.
In Richard Olivier's (S,1974) professionally commissioned photograph above are, from left to right: Mark Butcher (centre); Tim Allsop (wing); James Gardener (No.8); Greg Savage (flank) and Peter Railton (prop)
What follows is a calendar of our upcoming events, some dates confirmed and others suggested. Please do have a look at them. I am very mindful that ODs and their families have their own social lives and so I would not expect anyone to feel obliged to attend any of these simply because they are OD events. Nevertheless, there is a diversity of functions and my hope is that one or two may appeal to you. This is not a numbers game and even the smallest occasions are lively, fun and very much an opportunity to rekindle and share Bishops' memories and experiences and build a stronger network with a wide range of ODs.If any OD is thinking of arranging a get-together, formal or informal, and would like me to publicise it in these newsletters, please get in touch.
As always, ideas, suggestions and even (gentle) criticism are very welcome.

Should any of you wish to contact me, please do so either by email ( or on my mobile (07818014394)

With very kind regards

Friday 5th June 2015

Sunday 5th July 2015

Through Rob Johnston (2010) who's a member of the Leander Club, and Neil Orpen (1990), ODs and their families have the opportunity of joining those from St Andrew's and DSG at a picnic on the banks of the Thames - or something even grander - to watch a glorious day of rowing (and perhaps Robert will be rowing in the final). There is a possibility that Bishops will be sending a rowing team to compete and if they do, we are hoping that there will be an opportunity to meet with them. Neil Orpen (1990) is putting something a bit more serious which involves tables in a hospitality tent for ODs who prefer something a little grander. Both options sounds great, but to gauge interest and preferences, please could you let me know via this link (indicative price ranges will be on the form). By completing the form, you are not committing yourself, just expressing interest so that I know whether to go ahead with this.
Friday 14 August 2015

As I mentioned last month, the Bishops a cappella group, Simply Blue, have been invited to perform at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival. On their way home and, hopefully, flushed with singing success, they have offered to perform for ODs, their families and friends. This will be on Friday 14th August. I have not yet thought of a format or venue, so if any OD has some creative suggestions, please email me at Their Edinburgh performance dates are from 8-12 August should any OD find themselves in that part of the world then. In the meantime, get a taste of Simply Blue here.
Summer 2015
Tonbridge School's Old Tonbridgians have written to ask whether ODs would be interested in playing a golf match against them and possibly turning this into an annual challenge.
We need to get the ball rolling. The first match is slated for the summer of 2015. Once I have expressions of interest, I will confirm dates and course (the OTs have suggested Sunningdale should our team be more proficient than their secretary). We need to let the OTs know before the end of the year if we are to make their 2105 calendar, so if you are interested, please register now.
Saturday 12th September
An idea suggested (and slightly embellished by me) by a former UK ODU secretary, Chris Winearls (1967) is for ODs and their families to get together for a day out in Oxford. The plan would be to meet for lunch in Exeter College, the fourth oldest College, do a guided walking tour or some unguided punting (although chauffeurs can be hired) and finish with drinks in the beautiful gardens of New College (the second oldest). With Chris and one or two other contacts I have in Oxford, we would have the opportunity to see parts of the University inaccessible to the general public as well as enjoy the hospitality and atmosphere of the two Colleges. As yet, this is just an idea, but it would be helpful to know how much interest there is for this. Please do let me know (no commitment) by clicking here.
