Autumn Newsletter

It's been a busy few months at Breakthrough.
We've gained 4 new staff (a BIG welcome to Ella, Jessica, Louise and Miriam!), started new therapy groups and moved into a new building!

So we thought we'd update everyone on our news!...
Our first UK Support Centre is now OPEN!
Set in the heart of the Bath community our new centre has an office, therapy rooms, a drop-in space, and 2 large group rooms!
The building was officially opened with a socially-distanced ribbon cutting ceremony on 12th Sept 2020. Here are some highlights from some of the evening's speeches:

"You really, really, really should just be so unbelievably proud of yourselves. As Mayor you’re allowed to choose a theme for a year, and my theme is about combating loneliness. A lot of loneliness does come from a feeling of isolation, and a lot of isolation comes from a deep-rooted childhood trauma... what you’re doing speaks very closely to something that I too hold very, very dear to my heart." - Mayor of Bath, Councillor Manda Rigby

"It's so important that we understand trauma ...that here in Bath we get the awareness of trauma informed services, be that in schools, the police, probation services, the council. It is so, so important that we understand it, and it is so wonderful that you are creating this service for the people who need help and the people who really need the support and the services.... But, also for all of us to understand what trauma is and to make sure that, really, society understands it, and we here in Bath can set a shining light. And I’m so, so proud, thank you so much for what you are doing," - Wera Hobhouse, Bath MP

Support Centre - Appeal!

Less than 2 months after opening, and throughout lockdown, we've seen a 500% increase in referrals, and calls to our crisis helpline have more than doubled.
With the team so busy, there's still so much we need to do! So we've launched a fundraising appeal for help with:

  • Extending our crisis helpline service
  • Training volunteers to give life-saving support to those struggling to cope
  • Art & therapy resources.
  • Therapy centre necessities (tissues, blankets, tea, etc)
  • Funding sessions for those on low-income
  • More therapist hours to help with our waiting lists

LocalGiving are matching all donations until 9th November - ...Amazing!

NEW - Charity Ambassador!

We are very excited to announce that Women's Rugby star Deborah Fleming has joined Breakthrough!
Survivors of trauma and abuse often struggle with finding their identity and knowing that surviving as a sign of their strength. Therefore we're very encouraged to have an ambassador who shows the nation what a strong woman can do!
Deborah is a force to be reckoned with, she's a Commonwealth Games medal winner for England, and currently part of the Saracens Women's team.
When she's not scoring tries, Deborah is a gym manager and Cornish coastline enthusiast! And we are very glad to have her on board :-)

Guest Blog!

"I’ve been working with Breakthrough now for over two months and it still stands true that no two days have been the same. Whether it’s handling the crisis call line, rating cakes made for the office Bake-Off, helping to organise training days, or having a nerf gun war – I will never be able to predict what my day will look like when I wake up in the morning.
I’ve been really enjoying helping to be a part of the many exciting projects Breakthrough are developing at the moment, the vision and motivation to help is so evident in everything that the team takes on and I feel extremely grateful to be a part of such inspiring work.
The most special moment of my placement experience so far has definitely been the opening night of the new support centre, the emotion behind the ribbon cutting was indescribable – especially after the setbacks that have affected us all in 2020.
Working with people who have such a passion and love for their work makes every day and every task so worthwhile, and the more I learn about the impact of trauma from a psychological perspective, the more I’m developing a deep personal interest and determination to help make society trauma-aware and provide safety for all those that need it. I have developed a profound care and respect for everyone I have met since starting my placement, and wouldn’t wish to be spending my year doing anything else!"
