8 September 2021 15:00-17:00 CEST @Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam

We are delighted to invite you in person for the 2021/22 Opening of the Academic Year. This is a special year for NIAS as we celebrate our 50 Anniversary as well as 50 years of Academic Freedom. Celebrate that for fifty years NIAS has been providing an intellectual haven for scholars, where they are free to pursue their curiosity-driven research.

President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Prof. Ineke Sluiter and NIAS Director, Prof. Jan Willem Duyvendak will stress the necessity of maintaining academic freedom to nourish innovation in science.

We also welcome a special guest Prof. Nadia Al-Bagdadi, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University and former President (2018-2021) of the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study.

Alumna Hagar Peeters, Writer-in-residence 2019/20 will read her short story, and 2021/22 Fellows will be there in person for the 3-minute presentations.

You are warmly invited to join us for this festive moment which will be held with social distancing guidelines in place. The event will be live-streamed as well.

Please register for the event as the capacity is limited, and do let us know if you cannot make it.

With best wishes,
Jan Willem Duyvendak and Fenneke Wekker
