 Celebrating Earth Day!

Did you know Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Nelson in 1970? Spurred by his desire to bring greater awareness to environmental protection, over 20 million Americans rallied together on April 22, 1970 showing broad support for a blossoming environmental movement. The first Earth Day is credited with inspiring the passage of the landmark Clean Air Act,  Endangered Species Act, and many other groundbreaking laws that closely followed. According the Earth Day Network, more than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world!

In honor of the momentous accomplishment, we will be celebrating Earth Day at Western Municipal Water District's annual Earth Night in the Garden! Come visit us on Thursday, April 20th from 3-7pm at our table for our wildflower seed activity! For more details click here!

We will also be celebrating Earth Day at Sherman Indian High School's 1st Annual Environmental Expo! Join us on Saturday, April 22nd from 1-4pm at Sherman Indian High School and listen to various speakers including Tima Lotah Link, Chumash basket weaver and traditional cultural practicioner, Charles Sepulveda, Tongva and Acjachemen scholar and professor at Cal Poly Pomona, and Anecita Agustinez, Dine/Navajo Tribal Advisor to the California Department of Water.

Conservation Partnership in Western Riverside County

We recently entered into a partnership with the Western Riverside County Regional Conservation Authority (RCA) to work cooperatively in the implementation of the Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP).

The RCA, a joint powers authority made up of the County of Riverside, all western Riverside County cities, Caltrans, State Parks, and the Riverside County Transportation Commission, was formed in 2004 to implement the MSHCP. The MSHCP is intended to protect 146 native plant and animal species. To accomplish the plan, the RCA is responsible for acquiring 153,000 acres for conservation, which when added to another 347,000 acres of already conserved lands, will total 500,000 acres of lands in preservation.

Our partnership helps the RCA reach its conservation goals by adding 1,081 acres of habitat lands conserved by RLC to the 153,000 acres of lands the RCA is dedicated to conserving in western Riverside County by 2029.

RLC is pleased to be able to assist the RCA in achieving meaningful conservation in order to protect biodiversity and maintain the region's quality of life. For more information about the RCA and MSHCP, click here.

RLC says farewell to long-time Board Member

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to long-time Board Member, Kim Davidson-Morgan. Kim was a regular fixture at Board meetings, arriving early to welcome everyone into the room with a friendly smile and an eager "how are you?"  Kim was also a gifted fundraiser and a strong supporter for our annual Pride of Place in the Great Outdoors Gala. Kim passed away on March 11, 2017.

Please email nicole@riversidelandconservancy.org if you would like details on her funeral arrangements.
