Making leather, kink, BDSM, and fetish accessible through research, preservation, education and community engagement
Velvet, Now through May 17th in the Guest Artist Gallery
The Guest Artist Gallery is hosting the first exhibit of the new year and it is not to be missed. Velvet features the work of two Chicago artists, Melissa Hespelt and Caleb Yono. With videos, photographs, drawings and installations, the artists respond to and negotiate ideas of desire, the male gaze and sexual autonomy amidst a narrative that has been constructed through a lens of patriarchy and fetishism. The works question how we process the complex network of empowerment, misogyny and sexual/gendered normatives in images and in ourselves.

Melissa Hespelt (1996) is an interdisciplinary artist working to free glamour, superficiality, and the erotic from their negative connotations with feminism by engaging in acts of embodiment, transformation, & self- objectification. Melissa holds a BFA from The School of The Art Institute.

Caleb Yono (1981) works with representations of figures caught in moments of transformation and transmutation. Caleb's works on paper, performances, photographs, videos, and objects; Yono hopes to understand and process the dissonance and harmony of the feminine, femme, and hysteric. Caleb holds an MFA from The School of the Art institute of Chicago in painting and drawing. Caleb has exhibited with both national and international galleries including Andrew Rafacz, Monya Rowe, and Roots and Culture.

Velvet runs through May 17th, and is viewable as part of regular museum admission.
