Leather Legacies: Reflections and Ruminations on Our Collective History and Future on the Fringe

Join us every Thursday at 2pm Central for community conversations on issues of special significance to the leather and kink communities. Each week will feature a noted community leader to lead the discussion, with opportunities for questions and comments from all attending. Programs take place via Zoom and can be accessed from a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. You can download the free Zoom app if you wish, or just connect via your web browser. No account is necessary to join a Zoom event. All programs are free, and open to anyone ages 18 and over.

Mentoring Isn’t That Difficult. In a recent Recon article Race Bannon wrote: “The interesting thing is that everyone can be a mentor. All of us know a bit more about or have more experience with some aspect of the kink experience than someone else. That's why I'm cautious about elevating anyone as an expert on all things leather, fetish, kink or whatever. We're all experts about something. Even expertise outside of the immediate realm of kink can inform our fetish lives in profound ways (philosophy, psychology, communication skills, and so on).”

That’s the attitude Race has had since he entered the leather scene in the early 70s. In this casual informational and discussion presentation Race will talk about his perspective on mentorship and kink education and how both newcomers and more seasoned kinksters can utilize both to improve themselves personally and erotically.

Race Bannon has been an organizer, writer, educator, speaker and activist in the LGBT, leather/kink, polyamory and HIV/STI prevention realms since 1973. He’s authored two books, been published extensively, spoken to hundreds of audiences, created the world's largest kink-friendly psychotherapist and medical referral service, was a leader of The DSM Project that led to a beneficial change in the way psychotherapy views BDSM, founded a groundbreaking alternative sexuality publishing company, been an internet radio sex talk show host, received national and local awards, appeared in numerous documentaries, and currently also writes for the Bay Area Reporter as well as Recon and Drummer Magazine.
