Keep active with SHCA Family Fitness options in the New Year!

Adult involvement in SHCA Fitness classes has been phenomenal and we’ve heard from adults that they’d like their children to be able to experience the same fitness fun they are enjoying and show them that fitness can be enjoyable.

We searched for an instructor that was able to program fitness classes that a child would be interested in as well as providing a workout for the parents at the same time.  With the help of our instructor finder with the City of Saskatoon we have managed to secure one!

We’ve passed along suggestions to the instructor from interested parents and met with the instructor to brainstorm a plan for the winter.  If you have any suggestions about what you would like to see from a Family Fitness class, please let us know programming@silverwoodcommunity.org!

We have scheduled two options for your consideration:
Monday, January 4 – March 21 (no class Feb 15 & Mar 7) This class will be geared towards 8-12 year olds & their parent(s)  7:15-8:00 pm $15 each

Friday, January 8 – March 18 (no class Jan 29, Feb 19) This class will be geared towards 6-10 year olds & their parent(s)  6-6:45 pm  $15 each
This class is designed for families who want to become active and healthy.  It’s a 45 minute class offered weekly for children and their parents. There are two family classes offered per week: one for children ages 8-12 and one for ages 6-10. Each class includes a variety of fun, active games that children will enjoy and also allow parents to participate and receive benefits and enjoyment as well. The classes teach proper warm up and safety techniques, include group and partner games, and exercises that build strength, flexibility, and cardio endurance.

What makes this class unique is that it encourages parents and children to be active together, promoting the increase of healthy behaviors for the whole family, as well as strengthens the relationship between parent and child in an active setting. Not only does the class encourage physical activity, it is designed to make exercise fun and suitable for the whole family.

Another option for you to consider if you want to keep active with your children but aren’t interested in a formal class setting,  join us for the Family Gym Time.  This supervised gym time will be set for 5-9 year olds and their parent(s) on Monday evenings from 6:35-7:10 at a cost of $10 each.   This gym time will be more in the form of games than organized exercises.  Again we are open to suggestions about format – so please let us know if you have any preferences.

If you have children that are not within the designated age limits but you are interested in having them participate, please ensure you check with us to see if we can accommodate this.  Otherwise, please take a look at our schedule and see if there are other options that will work for you.

As part of our rental agreement with the schools, all children need to be supervised, so if you have children that won’t be participating in the class, please make alternate child care arrangements or find something designed for them in our programming schedule.

New Cooking Classes Offered for the Winter Session!

The Silverwood Heights Community Association is very pleased to present new cooking classes for the winter session.

We are working with a registered dietitian to develop some healthy cooking and baking options for you.  We also are working on a Kid’s Can Cook class for 7-10 year olds.   We also are offering a Mexican Cooking class.

Adult classes will be held on one evening, but we’ve decided to go ahead with a 4 week option for the kid’s classes.

Michael’s Independent Grocer has agreed to subsidize some of the class costs through gift cards so we are able to offer these classes at a lower for you!  Make sure you take the time to thank Michael while shopping at Michael’s Independent Grocer!

Here is a bit of basic information on the cooking classes for you.  Please take a look at the Winter 2016 schedule for more details (silverwoodcommunity.org/programs).

Kids Can Cook (7-10 year olds) - In this 4 week program, kids will learn the basics of cooking. On the last day, each young chef can invite a guest to dine with us at the end of class!

Making Meals Healthier and Making Baking Healthier - These two classes will give participants some ideas on how to lighten up their favourite recipes and make baked goods that will offer good nutrition!
Breakfast On The Go - In this class, we will set aside a few hours and prep for breakfast! Participants will leave with a variety of foods for the fridge and freezer at home, plus a bunch of recipes and ideas for more quick breakfasts.

Vegetarian Meal- In this class, we will prepare a full vegetarian meal to be enjoyed as a group. Participants will leave with ideas for meatless meals, recipes, and maybe some meatless leftovers!

Mexican Cooking - Our Latin Cooking class will be based on two main ingredients: Beans & Rice.  You will learn how to cook the beans and rice separately as well as how to combine them together to make various meals.  In many areas, rice and beans are often served side by side rather than mixed.   Beans and Rice are very common in Central America.  The dishes that you will learn to prepare are from El Salvador:   Bean Broth/Soup; Spanish Rice; Refried Beans; Casamiento ("Casamiento” means “wedding” and it’s the name of a bean and rice dish in El Salvador).

This class will be instructed by Ana Hernandez.  She was born and raised in El Salvador . She moved to Canada in 1992 and has a passion and a gift for cooking.  She has managed a cafeteria at a local high school for the past 11 years and  is also one of the main cooks at the  Central America and Mexico Pavilion which has become known for its amazing food in the last 4 years!
