What is Elf on the Shelf? The Elf on the Shelf has become a hugely popular lead up to Christmas - a bit like an advent calendar. It builds the excitement leading up to Christmas. The idea is that the elf is watching for good children and goes back to report to Santa.
The idea is that you move the Elf around each night so that it is a bit of a treasure hunt to find him in his new location in the morning. Be creative or not - there is also a list of excuses to use when you forget to move him.
The Christmas Tradition - the book included with the elf. A Christmas Tradition is a cleverly rhymed children's book explaining the story of Santa's scout elves, who are sent to be Santa's eyes and ears at children's homes around the world!
The elf never speaks when people are home or awake, but “moves” from place to place when no one is around.... The Elf also leaves just before Christmas to report back to Santa and only returns next Christmas.
