The Valdez Hall of Heroes has been developed to show our gratitude, appreciation, and respect to those who are serving and to those who have served in the U.S. Military. The display is located on the mezzanine at the Valdez Civic Center. As an ongoing program, applications will be accepted at any time for those wishing to honor a hero in the community. To apply,

WALKER CAPS PFD AT $1,000 AMID $1.29 BILLION IN BUDGET VETOES
News Miner- Gov. Bill Walker has capped the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend at $1,000 following the Legislature's inaction on measures to significantly close the state’s multi billion-dollar deficit. Walker, at an Anchorage news conference Wednesday, announced some $1.29 billion of vetoes that touched numerous areas, including K-12 education, the University of Alaska, substance abuse treatment, public broadcasting and transportation.

PINK SALMON FESTIVAL KICKS OFF VALDEZ SALMON SEASON

A Pink Salmon Festival complete with games, cooking competition and community barbeque kicked off the 4
th of July weekend in Valdez on Saturday. While many chose to visit the many events put on by the City of Valdez around town, it was a busy weekend for fishing as well. Halibut angling was productive and anglers were excited about the opening of the lingcod season July 1
st, however pink salmon fishing looks to be a bit slow getting started.

ALASKA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NO LONGER NEED NATIONAL TESTS TO GRADUATE
ADN- Alaska's high school students no longer need to take the SAT, ACT or WorkKeys test to get their diplomas. As of now, the Class of 2017 will only need to meet credit requirements to get their diplomas, said Margaret MacKinnon, director of assessment and accountability at Alaska's state education department.

VALDEZ HOME PRICES RISING
According to a report commissioned by the City of Valdez, the median price for homes in Valdez is 36% less than the statewide median, but median rents are
10% higher. The number of dwelling units being constructed per year in Valdez has declined sharply over the last 15 years. The decrease in new construction creates an aging housing stock and limits housing options for buyers and renters.
