Boys Basketball Team during Elk's Tournament
VHS BOYS FINISH SECOND AT ELK'S TOURNAMENT
The boys varsity team competed in the 40th Annual Elks Basketball tournament at home this past weekend. The Bucs' first game of the tournament was against the Cordova Wolverines. Valdez jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter leading 23-13.

VALDEZ CHEERLEADERS TAKE SECOND IN FIRST COMPETITION

This past weekend the VHS cheerleaders competed in a cheerleading competition at the Elks Basketball Tournament. On Friday, during halftime of the Valdez/Kotzebue game the Valdez cheerleading team, was judged on their half-time dance routine.

This past weekend the Lady Bucs compete in the 40th Annual Valdez Elks Basketball Tournament. Valdez had an easy 55-12 victory last Thursday against the Cordova Wolverines for their first game of the tournament.

During last week's City Council meeting, Mayor Knight proclaimed February 2017 Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

RYLEE NORRIS WINS GIRLS TITLE
Courtesy of VHS Ski Coach Pete Toye- Early morning temperatures in Talkeetna of -10F finally released their grip amid sunny skies and glowing Denali, allowing temperatures to soar to single digits and allow for legal racing conditions. The Buc girls had an exceptional outing which featured senior stalwart Rylee Norris winning the girls championship by a most impressive one minute and twenty seconds over the field of 30.

USCG OVERHAULING INACCURATE, OUTDATED ALASKA MAPS
ktoo- Unlike other states, Alaska is using topographic maps that were created over 50 years ago. These maps, some of which were hand-drawn, are rife with inaccuracies. Rivers flow upstream, mountains are out of place and some features are missing altogether. These mistakes affect everything from aviation to back country hiking. This year, Alaska hopes to take a big leap forward by completing new maps for over half of the state.

IDITAROD TRAIL SLED DOG RACE RESTART TO MOVE TO FAIRBANKS
The Board of Directors of the Iditarod Trail Committee voted unanimously to move the Iditarod restart location from Willow to Fairbanks due to the poor conditions of critical trail areas in the Alaska Range.
This marks the third time in the history of the Iditarod that the restart has been moved to Fairbanks due to poor conditions in the Alaska Range. The first was in 2003, and second in 2015.
