GMS COUNCILOR KYRA MEYER NOMINATED FOR AWARD

The Alaska School Councilor Association announced their finalists for the Alaska School Counselor of the Year award. The finalists are Donald Gatzke, Emmonak; Kyra Meyer, Valdez; Samantha McMorrow, North Pole & Kelly Hansen, Juneau. The winner will be awarded on Thursday, November 17 at the annual conference.

LADY BUCS TAKE FOURTH AT STATE

Last weekend the VHS volleyball team concluded their season at the three day 3A state tournament in Anchorage. Valdez qualified for the tournament by winning 1st place in the Aurora Conference Tournament. On the first day of competition the Lady Bucs had a strong start beating the number two seed Kotzebue Huskies.

GMS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT DRAWS A CROWD

Girls A Team
The Gilson Middle School Gymnasium was crowded Saturday night for the Championship games in the Valdez Invitational basketball tournament. Delta, Glennallen, Cordova, Monroe and Valdez competed at VHS and GMS all day Friday and Saturday. The Husky B Team made it to the Championship game and lost by just four points. The GMS Girls B Team won the Championship match against Monroe and the Girls A Team capped off the evening with a 3 point win against Monroe to win the Championship Game. Ally Seiber of Valdez was named MVP of the Girls A Tournament. Reese King and Kailani Tailua were named to the All-Tournament Team and Rebekah Ambacher was named to the Sportsmanship Team. Aurora Brown, Lily Alfaro, Shaylah Toro and Lucy Selloff were named to the All-Tournament Team and Ambrosia Woodgate was named to the Sportsmanship Team. Aiden McAtee was named to the A Boys All-Tournament Team. Evan Clark and Tate Chadwick were named to the All-Tournament B Team. Clay Woodgate and Jeffrey Prevost were named tot eh Sportsmanship Team. 
GMS Cheerleaders took 2nd place in the Cheerleading competition.

PARTS OF THE VALDEZ-EAGLE TRAIL CAN STILL BE WALKED
Newsminer- In the wake of the Klondike Gold Rush, U.S. Army Captain P.H. Ray was sent to Alaska in 1897 to investigate rumors of unrest among gold seekers along the U.S. portion of the Yukon River. During his travels, Ray heard from prospectors clamoring for an “All-American” route to the Yukon gold fields that would bypass the Canadian-controlled White Pass and Chilkoot Trails. Ray recommended that a military trail be built from the ice-free port of Valdez on Prince William Sound to the Yukon River Basin.

VALDEZ LIBRARY BOOK BASKET AUCTION SETS NEW RECORD

The Valdez Consortium Library broke fundraising records during its 17th annual Book Basket Auction held November 5th. The funds will be used to enhance the library's collection. 70 baskets were donated by citizens, agencies, and businesses. Over 200 people attended the auction. The auction raised $11,561, surpassing the record set last year by almost $1,000.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING CHANGED TO NOVEMBER 22

The City Council meeting scheduled for this Tuesday was changed due to AML Conference. It will be held Tuesday, November 22nd.

LADIES CHRISTMAS TEA

The 43rd Annual Ladies’ Christmas Tea will be held Wednesday, December 7, at 7 pm at the Valdez Civic Center. The Ladies’ Tea is open to all women, 10 years of age and older, and is free. We do accept donations but we do not charge to attend the Tea.

The theme this year is “The Christmas Guest” and the speaker is Adele Morgan. There will be a skit, a Christmas carol group sing, wonderful gift basket door prizes, a live poinsettia door prize for each table, not to mention every women attending gets a special Christmas ornament and other little gifts, and we will of course have refreshments after the Tea.

MAN FINDS TWO MOOSE FROZEN MID-FIGHT IN ALASKAN RIVER
RT- A man in Alaska discovered two moose frozen in ice and they appear to have frozen in mid-fight, with both sets of antlers locked together.
