SWIMMERS FINISH STRONG AT REGIONS
This past weekend Valdez High School hosted the 2015 Region III Swimming and Diving Championships. This competition marks the first of four regional tournaments in Valdez. Over 250 students from around the state competed in the three day tournament. On Friday, thirteen Valdez swimmers spent the day competing in preliminary races for placement in final races on Saturday. The swimmers finished with strong personal performances, but will not be moving on to state. Overall, the Valdez girls team had a score of 17.50, which gave them a 7th
place finish. The Valdez boys team received an overall score of 2 giving them an eighth place finish.
VHS VOLLEYBALL REGIONS
Valdez High School took time to recognize senior volleyball players during matches against Kenny Lake and Glennallen last weekend. The volleyball team recognized seven seniors for their outstanding high school careers; Jessi Cox, Maddy Fleming, Madeline Hogarth, Sidney Hursh, Zoe Langseth, Mesa Rohrer, and Joy Shumate. The volleyball team will be hosting a regional tournament this weekend with six teams: Valdez, Delta, Monroe, Eielson, Galena, and Hutchison. The tournament is this Friday and Saturday in the VHS gym. The hometown Lady Bucs will have their first match at 3:45pm Friday, and the final game of the day will be at 7:15pm. Saturday. The matches begin at 10am and the championship game and award ceremony start at 3:15pm Saturday. The Monroe Catholic Rams will be going into the tournament as the first seed and the Lady Bucs will be right behind them as second seed. Coach Ronal Langseth is very optimistic going into this weekend. “Mesa and Zoe are two of the most devastating hitters in the state,” said Langseth.
CODY GREENE TAKES 2nd IN SEWARD TOURNAMENT
The VHS wrestling team recently participated in the King of the Mountain Wrestling Tournament in Seward. Once again, VHS senior Cody Greene represented Valdez well in the tournament. Greene wrestled his way to a second place finish in the 138 pound weight division. The wrestling team is preparing for their upcoming ACS tournament this weekend. After that, Valdez will only have two more wrestling meets before hosting the regional tournament December 11th
through the 12th
BOARDING SCHOOL PLAY EVOKES POWERFUL REACTION FROM NATIVE FORMER STUDENTS
- Jack Dalton’s play “Assimilation
” made a powerful impression when it premiered in Anchorage five years ago. Dalton had written a blistering indictment of the boarding school era with roles reversed. In his telling, a vicious Native headmaster punishes white children for not being sufficiently Native. For full story, click here.

THE PLAY ASSIMILATION IN VALDEZ THIS FRIDAY
, a play by Alaska Native playwright Jack Dalton, will be presented at 7pm this Friday at the Valdez Civic Center Ballroom. Tickets are $15 and free for PWSCC, VHS and Valdez Native Tribe members. This play is for mature audiences about a boarding school run by Natives to assimilate White students into the Yup’ik culture. A discussion and “healing circle” will follow the performance.

PORTS & HARBOR COMMISSION RECOGNIZE THE F/V KINGFISHER CREW
The Ports & Harbor Commission recognized the Captain and Crew of the F/V Kingfisher
. Captain Thane Miller and his crew, Diane Schreier, Lisa Clemens, and Larry Noble, pulled five individuals out of the water after their 27 foot recreational vessel, Pure Pleasure
, sank this summer. The crew was responsible for the survival of the two women and three men who were clinging to an overturned rubber boat. The Commission also recognized the efforts made by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Valdez Fire Department.

ALASKAN CHRISTMAS TREE WILL GRACE CAPITOL BUILDING IN WASHINGTON D.C.
Getting the US Capitol Christmas Tree from the Alaskan Snow River floodplain to the west lawn of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. costs the taxpayers very little. About 52 sponsors nationally, including some locally, have once again donated the wherewithal to transport an evergreen behemoth cross-country in one piece with celebratory stops along the way.
