60 POUNDERS LEAD THE WAY IN VALDEZ HALIBUT DERBY

Anglers returning to Port Valdez did so with sunburns the opening weekend of the Valdez Halibut Derby. Sunny skies and whales putting on a show in Prince William Sound, set the stage for a lot of activity in the Valdez Harbor.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL THIS THURSDAY

It is the final week of classes for Valdez City Schools.  This Thursday, May 26th is an early release day as well as the last day for students.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STAFF AND STUDENTS TAKE ON LANDSCAPING PROJECT

Mrs. Norris' and Mr. Robison's science classes have taken on the project of landscaping at the middle school. All of the plants, shrubs and trees that were planted by the contractor have died and are being replaced with compatible trees, scrubs and plants that will thrive in the Valdez community.

SCHOOL BOARD OFFICERS ELECTED
Officer elections were held during the May 9th School Board meeting. Kathy Todd nominated Joe Prax to be President of the Board. The nomination was seconded and voting was unanimous. Kathy Todd was voted in as Vice President, Dolores Gard was elected Treasurer, and Bill Connell was elected to the Policy Review Committee. All votes were unanimous.
 Members of the Policy Review Committee will be Kathy Todd, Bill Connell, Melissa Cockerham, with Dolores Gard as alternate.
Members of the Curriculum Review Committee will be Darryl Verfaillie, Dolores Gard and Joe Prax. The curriculum currently being reviewed is social studies.
Members of the Certified Sick Bank Committee will be Darryl Verfaillie and Bill Connell. Members of the Classified Sick Bank Committee will be Alan Sorum and Dolores Gard.
 
GMS HAPPENINGS AND FINAL WEEK SCHEDULE

This Tuesday is the GMS Community Appreciation Day, which includes a FREE Car Wash at the MS between 9-1:30am.

WELCOME BABY PATRICK

Aaron and Tracey Gerrard welcomed Patrick Kenneth Gerrard to the world on May 19th.  He weighed 11 lbs and was 22" long.  Congratulations!

VALDEZ ARTS COUNCIL ANNUAL PICNIC

VAC is having a FREE BBQ and bonfire on Tuesday, May 31st from 6-8pm.  The event will be held at Dock Point Pavilion and will feature something to burn, art to share and an acoustic instrument to play.  Bring a dish to share and learn how you can become involved with the Arts Council.  Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided.  SEE FLYER

VCS HIRING SUMMER MAINTENANCE WORKERS

Valdez City Schools is looking for summer maintenance workers.  Must be able to lift 70 pounds on a continuous basis.  Pay is $17/hour.  If interested, please submit a classified application, which can be found at valdezcityschools.org - or if you already have an application submitted, please turn in a letter of interest.  Please submit all paperwork to Brenda Kimble at the School District Office.
