VHS DRAMA CLUB COMPETES IN ANCHORAGE

Courtesy Becky Walker- The VHS Drama Club recently attended the Alaska State Drama, Debate and Forensics Competition in Anchorage. This was the first time that VHS has competed. We competed in the Reader's Theater and Duet Acting category. Our Reader's Theater--"Squad Goals" by Don Zolidas was definitely a crowd favorite. Ashlee Shaeffer and Tiffany Larcom had some great performances with their cutting from
The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde. Gabby Franklin and Caleb Balowski did a fantastic job on their scene from the play,
Barefoot in the Park, by Neil Simon. They had their audience laughing out loud with their quirky characters and their hilarious interaction with each other. It was a great experience and we are already looking forward to next year!
KVAK CAKE AUCTION A HUGE SUCCESS

Each year during Frosty Fever, KVAK hosts a live cake auction to benefit a good cause. From 2008 to 2016, KVAK has helped various charities raise a whopping total of
$25,914.50. This year’s auction raised
$2,635 to help provide needed goods to local Valdez kids in Foster Care. Special thanks to Girl Scout Troop #272 for and bakers for their donation of time and talents. All proceeds from the auction go to the chosen cause each year and KVAK covers the cost of staff time and airtime to make it a success.

LAWSUIT QUESTIONS STATE'S USE OF KIDS' SOCIAL SECURITY CASH
US News & World Report- A lawsuit is challenging Alaska's practice of using some foster kids' social security benefits to pay for care without notifying the child.
About 160 foster children in Alaska are entitled to social security benefits because they have a disability or one of their parents has died. Often, that money doesn't go to the individual child, but instead goes straight to the state.
