TRACY RAYNOR APPOINTED CHIEF OF VALDEZ FIRE DEPARTMENT

Following an exhaustive recruiting effort, City Manager Dennis Ragsdale appointed Tracy Raynor as Chief of the Valdez Fire Department to replace retired Chief George Keeney. 
Chief Raynor began his public service career in 1979, where he served as a volunteer firefighter for the Star Fire Protection District in Idaho, rising to the rank of Deputy Chief.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR
RON SMITH THURSDAY

There will be a memorial service for Ronald Elijah Smith at Faith Harbor Fellowship in Valdez on Thursday at 7 PM. Ron's ashes will be scattered in Prince William Sound in a ceremony the following morning. According to the 22nd Annual Highway Report from the Reason Foundation, the state of Alaska has the nation's worst roads. The other states ranking at the bottom are New Jersey, Hawaii, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

CASPIAN TERNS IN ALASKA SPOTTED 1,000 MILES FARTHER NORTH THAN EVER BEFORE
Science Explorer- Caspian terns — a striking white shorebird species that sports a black cap and long red-orange bill — have ventured into new territory this year. Scientists were recently surprised to find a Caspian tern nest in northern Alaska, 1,000 miles further north than the species has previously been recorded.

HEIDEN VIEW CELL SITE NOW 4G LTE

Copper Valley Telecom announced that it has upgraded its cell site located at milepost 21 Richardson Highway to 4G LTE. The site serves the Heiden View subdivision and the Richardson Highway corridor from approximately milepost 17 (north of Keystone Canyon) to approximately milepost 23 (near the hairpin corner leading to Thompson Pass).
Nearby recreational areas such as Wortmann's Canyon across the Lowe River and Stone Mountain also receive signal from the site cell.
