Valdez joined teams from Homer, Soldotna, Kenai, Su Valley, Palmer, Wasilla, and Colony this past Saturday for the Matsu Invite Nordic ski race at Government Peak/Hatcher Pass.

VPD ISSUES SCAM ALERT

VPD Dispatch has received several calls from concerned Valdez residents who are receiving fraudulent phone calls from someone claiming to represent the "IRS". With each of the cases reported this week, a caller accuses the citizen of owing money and threatens with arrest and other negative consequences if the citizen fails to take immediate action. VALDEZ HOSTS WRESTLING REGIONALS

This weekend Valdez will be hosting this year’s regional wrestling tournament. Over 100 student athletes and parents will be in attendance for the two day tournament scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, December 11th and 12th in the VHS gym. This year Valdez has a team of six wrestlers who will be representing VHS and competing for a spot in the state tournament in Chugiak. One of the wrestlers competing for Valdez will be VHS senior Cody Greene. Greene has had a strong individual season with 1st place finishes in three different tournaments as well as a 2nd place finish at the King of the Mountain tournament in Seward.

DANGER WARNING: THIN ICE AT RUTH POND

As winter arrives in Valdez, the City reminds residents to stay safe and avoid walking on Ruth Pond. At this point in the season, the pond is not completely frozen and serious danger exists of falling through the ice.

2016 ALASKA YOUNG FISHERMEN’S SUMMIT PLANNED
New Alaska commercial fishermen will get a chance to meet and learn with their peers in January at the sixth Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit.  Alaska fishing industry leaders volunteer their time and expertise to mentor the young fishermen, and to teach on a range of topics.

MAGNITUDE 4.6 EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND

On Wednesday, Dec 2nd at 1:05am, a magnitude 4.61 earthquake rattled Valdez.  The Alaska Earthquake Center / Geophysical Institute UAF reported a depth of 22 miles and a center 50 miles NW of Valdez. 

SERVICES FOR CELESTE DITMAN TODAY

There will be a celebration of life for Celeste Ditman, today, Monday, Dec 7th at 6pm. Services will be held at the Valdez Civic Center with a potluck reception immediately following at Bayside Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to International Friends of Compassion or the Bayside Community Church Benevolence Fund in Celeste's name. 

BUCCANEER FAN OF THE WEEK
The Valdez High School wrestling team has been working hard all season and the Regional Tournament is right here in Valdez. We encourage the community to come out and support our local wrestlers this Friday and Saturday.

ALEUTIAN VILLAGE MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY
Wednesday, Dec 9th at 6:00pm
in City Council Chambers
City Manager Bob Jean will conduct an open house meeting with residents of Aleutian Village Trailer Park and concerned citizens to hear comments, concerns and ideas regarding the notice of closure of the trailer park issued by the Aleut Corporation. Mr. Jean will provide updates from recent meetings with the Aleut Corporation and the Governor’s office.
