Cody Greene wins Outstanding Wrestler Award.

"WE ALASKANS" WINNERS

Mrs. Walker's Creative Writing class participated in a writing contest sponsored by The Alaska Dispatch News.  Participants were asked to write an Alaskan story in only six words.  Of the 500 entries received, Alaska Dispatch will be publishing three winners as well as a couple dozen favorites in the October 25 issue of "We Alaskans."  The work of four VHS students was chosen to be featured in this publication.

VHS WEEKEND WRAP UP

Buccaneer sports had an eventful weekend while hosting the annual VHS “Throw Down In Snow Town” Wrestling Tournament. This year the VHS wrestling team had five student athletes participate in the tournament.  VHS senior Cody Greene walked away with top honors. Greene had an impressive performance winning 1st place in the 138 pound division and walking away with the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award.  VHS junior Quentin Bujan had an exceptional performance as well winning 3rd place in the 285 pound weight division. The wrestlers now look forward to the “King of the Mountain” tournament in Seward this weekend. In other sports, the high school volleyball team faced off against the Eielson Ravens. Once again the Lady Bucs had a dominant performance winning all their sets for the weekend.

SWIMMING REGIONALS

The Valdez High School will host the Region III Swimming and Diving Championships. Eleven schools and over 250 student athletes will be coming to participate in this three day tournament. The competition is set for October 29th through Saturday, October 31st, and will be held at the VHS Pool.  On Thursday, the event will start at 4:30pm with the female and male diving preliminaries. On Friday, events begin at 10:30am and will conclude at 7pm. Saturday, the championships will conclude with the swimming and diving finals starting at 1pm. An award ceremony will follow.  This year the VHS Swimming team has a group of 13 spirited student athletes, including five VHS seniors: Emily Doyel, Hannah Haase, Torie Hansen, Josie McNelly, and Stuart Relay.

VHS VOLLEYBALL SENIOR RECOGNITION

This weekend, VHS will recognize the senior volleyball athletes. The team concluded the conference games last weekend by winning against the Eielson Ravens.  They now look toward Volleyball Regionals in Valdez on November 6th. The volleyball team has scheduled friendly match – ups in the VHS gym for Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st against the Glennallen Panthers and Kenny Lake Hawks. On Friday, the JV volleyball team will face the Kenny Lake Hawks at 4pm then the varsity team will play the Glenallen Panthers at 5:30pm. Following the varsity game there will be a brief ceremony in the gym to recognize the seven senior volleyball athletes who have amassed a great high school volleyball career at VHS. On Saturday, they will conclude their friendly match – ups with the JV team playing Glennallen at 10am and the varsity team playing Kenny Lake at 11:30am.

BLM APPROVES FIRST FEDERAL PRODUCTION WELL IN THE NATIONAL PETROLEUM RESERVE

MASQUERADE FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Valdez Coop Preschoool is hosting a Masquerade wine tasting and silent auction at Fat Mermaid.  Tickets are $35 and include wine and gourmet hors d’oeuvres hosted by the Fat Mermaid and K&L.  This is a 21 and older event and a no host bar will be available.  Tickets available at Fat Mermaid.  Event starts 6:30 pm this Friday and you’ll get a free mask at the door, so no worries if you don’t have your own.

DEADLINE THURSDAY FOR CVEA RURALITE COVER PHOTO CONTEST
