Once again our great community came together and helped provide a terrific venue for another very competitive Nordic ski competition. Last weekend teams from West Valley, Lathrop, Colony, Su Valley, Wasilla, and Grace Christian joined the Valdez Bucs for two days of skiing action.  READ STORY

JV TEAMS WIN FIRST GAMES OF THE SEASON

 On Friday, the JV boys team had an impressive victory of 60-15 against Hutchison while the girls JV team started off Saturday with a victory of 40-30.  Read story HERE

VARSITY BUCCANEERS IMPRESS IN THEIR FIRST CONFERENCE GAMES
This past weekend the VHS basketball teams played their first games at home against the Hutchison Hawks. These games also marked the first conference games for the buccaneer season.

MASSIVE MURRE DIE-OFF IN SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA
Dead common murres line the shores of Southcentral Alaska, including Valdez.  The murre die-off was starting to be noticed from Alaska to California last summer but has recently spiked dramatically.  Murres normally spend the winter off-shore but have stayed close to shores with some moving inland this year- even as far Fairbanks. The Valdez Animal Shelter provided advice for anyone wanting to aid the murres.  CLICK HERE for more.

FLU SHOT CLINIC TODAY

The Valdez Fire Department will be administering flu shots at Safeway today, Monday January 11th, from 5:00-7:00 pm.  If you would like a flu shot, stop by the ambulance for a FREE Vaccination.

AK DOT HOLDING PUBLIC DISCUSSION THIS TUESDAY IN VALDEZ: POSSIBLE REDUCED SERVICES FOR THOMPSON PASS
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is proposing reducing services at six maintenance camps, including the Thompson Pass Maintenance Station.  The public is invited to participate in a meeting to discuss the issue this Tuesday, January 12th from 5-6:30 pm.  READ MORE HERE

There have been moose taking advantage of our plowed roads around mile eight to nine.  They have created problems for drivers and caused several near accidents.

DISCUSSION OF SEVERAL REVISIONS OF THE 2016-17 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Five drafts of the calendar for the 2016-17 school year have been brought before the Valdez School Board.  The Board will be discussing calendar options at their meeting tonight.  Here are links to the proposed calendars:

SCHOOL BOARD LOOKING TO CHANGE HIGH SCHOOL MATH REQUIREMENTS
Valdez School Board is planning to increase the number of math credits a high school student needs to graduate.  Requirements will be effective beginning with the current sophomore class.

DIRECTOR OF THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD TO VISIT VALDEZ THIS WEEK
Lt. Gen. Timothy Kadavy, Director of the Army National Guard, will visit Alaska this week with stops at JBER, Ft. Greely, and in Bethel, Napaskiak and Valdez.  Lt. Gen. Kadavy will be looking at the unique challenges and capabilities of their organization in AK in an effort to garner support for revitalization of the Guard and growth of the Alaska State Defense Force in rural Alaska.

JESSE LEBEAU COMING TO VALDEZ
 

Alaska native, Jesse Lebeau, is one of the premiere basketball trick artists in the world and author of the book, Among the Giants.  He will be speaking to local students and the community this Friday, January 15th.  
HHES Assembly: 9:15 am
GMS Assembly: 11:50 am
VHS Assembly: 1:05 pm with a meet and greet after the assembly. 
Friday Evening: 6:30 pm @ VHS Gym between the Varsity and Junior Varsity games. 
 
To encourage families to come out to these games, any students or children that attend the game with their parent or guardian will be give FREE admission the games on Friday.  


UNITED WAY FUNDING APPLICATIONS DUE THIS FRIDAY
Don't forget!  2016 Funding applications for United Way Valdez are due this Friday, January 15th.  Any non-profit organization interested in applying that is in need of an application (or more information) can send a request to UnitedWayValdez@gmail.com.  
 

CVEA ACCEPTING BOARD NOMINATIONS FOR 2016

Three director seats are up for election in 2016; one seat in the Valdez District and two seats in the Copper Basin District.  Nomination packets can be picked up at CVEA or mailed to you. Nominating Petitions must be submitted and validated by Monday, February 1, 2016. For more information visit www.cvea.org.

VALDEZ VETERINARY CLINIC HIRING

The Valdez Veterinary Clinic is seeking a full-time veterinary assistant.  Position includes animal care, assisting veterinarian and lots of cleaning.  Applications can be picked up at the veterinary clinic at 321 Egan St, Suite 104.  Applications and resumes due Monday, January 18th.
