Once again our great community came together and helped provide a terrific venue for another very competitive Nordic ski competition. Last weekend teams from West Valley, Lathrop, Colony, Su Valley, Wasilla, and Grace Christian joined the Valdez Bucs for two days of skiing action.

JV TEAMS WIN FIRST GAMES OF THE SEASON
Preston Fifarek leads the team
On Friday, the JV boys team had an impressive victory of 60-15 against Hutchison while the girls JV team started off Saturday with a victory of 40-30. Read story HERE
VARSITY BUCCANEERS IMPRESS IN THEIR FIRST CONFERENCE GAMES
This past weekend the VHS basketball teams played their first games at home against the Hutchison Hawks. These games also marked the first conference games for the buccaneer season.

MASSIVE MURRE DIE-OFF IN SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA
Dead common murres line the shores of Southcentral Alaska, including Valdez. The murre die-off was starting to be noticed from Alaska to California last summer but has recently spiked dramatically. Murres normally spend the winter off-shore but have stayed close to shores with some moving inland this year- even as far Fairbanks. The Valdez Animal Shelter provided advice for anyone wanting to aid the murres.

The Valdez Fire Department will be administering flu shots at Safeway today, Monday January 11th, from 5:00-7:00 pm. If you would like a flu shot, stop by the ambulance for a FREE Vaccination.
AK DOT HOLDING PUBLIC DISCUSSION THIS TUESDAY IN VALDEZ: POSSIBLE REDUCED SERVICES FOR THOMPSON PASS
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is proposing reducing services at six maintenance camps, including the Thompson Pass Maintenance Station. The public is invited to participate in a meeting to discuss the issue this Tuesday, January 12th from 5-6:30 pm.

SCHOOL BOARD LOOKING TO CHANGE HIGH SCHOOL MATH REQUIREMENTS
Valdez School Board is planning to increase the number of math credits a high school student needs to graduate. Requirements will be effective beginning with the current sophomore class.
DIRECTOR OF THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD TO VISIT VALDEZ THIS WEEK
Lt. Gen. Timothy Kadavy, Director of the Army National Guard, will visit Alaska this week with stops at JBER, Ft. Greely, and in Bethel, Napaskiak and Valdez. Lt. Gen. Kadavy will be looking at the unique challenges and capabilities of their organization in AK in an effort to garner support for revitalization of the Guard and growth of the Alaska State Defense Force in rural Alaska.
