Over 200 high school basketball players and cheerleaders joined the Valdez Buccaneers for the annual Valdez Elks Basketball Tournament.

VHS CHEERLEADERS TAKE FIRST IN COMPETITION
This past weekend the VHS cheerleaders had their first cheer competition of the year during the Elks Basketball Tournament.

MEETING TO DISCUSS Proposed Local Commercial Marijuana Regulations this Thursday
Alaskan voters passed a vote to legalize marijuana but there are still a lot of decisions the City of Valdez needs to make regarding the regulation of marijuana. There will be a town hall meeting to review local options for Commercial Marijuana operations this Thursday, February 18th at 6pm
in City Council Chambers. A Copy of the draft zoning amendments and additional information can be on the City’s website at www.ci.valdez.ak.us/marijuana
. Issues to be determined with regard to Marijuana Regulations include such things as: where the City will allow marijuana consumption; number of marijuana facilities allowed; and hours of operation for marijuana facilities. See Proposed Local Commercial Marijuana Zoning Regulations HERE.

BUCS COMPETE AT MAT-SU BOROUGH RELAYS
The Valdez ski team ventured to Palmer this past weekend to compete in the annual Borough Championships, this time with a unique twist. This event featured two person relay teams and provided a very fast paced, exciting competition for all. READ STORY

SKI TRAILS CLOSED THIS WEEKEND
The East & West Dikes, including the Snow Machine Loop, and Mineral Creek Road through the canyon will be closed to all recreational usage. READ MORE
VPD AND USPS JOINT INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST
VPD received information about a drug shipment coming through the USPS. Last Monday, officers arrested Rhonda McConkie, DOB: 1/1/67 on one count of felony misconduct involving a controlled substance. Officers seized a package containing approximately ten grams of methamphetamine from McConkie after observing her retrieve the package from the Valdez Post Office. Ms. McConkie was arraigned and remains in custody. Bail conditions were set at $5,000 cash and 24 Hour Third Party Custodian.

The Valdez City Council meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, Feb 16th
has been postponed due to travel schedules. The meeting will now be held Monday, Feb 29th
. The meeting scheduled for March 1st
will be held as planned.
