
VHS ALUMNI CARL ARTS TO BE HONORED THIS WEEKEND
This weekend at the Elks Tournament there will be a small ceremony to honor former VHS basketball player Carl Arts. Named 2003-04 Alaska 3A Player of the Year after leading Valdez High to a 28-0 record and its second state title in three years.

ELKS TOURNAMENT IN VALDEZ THIS WEEKEND
The updated brackets are in for the Valdez Elks Tournament. CLICK HERE for all the game times. The Valdez Varsity girls will tip off against Cordova on Thursday at 6pm and the Varsity Boys will play Cordova in first round action at 7:30pm. KVAK's Iam Cabitac will be posting updated brackets on the kvakradio.com sports page and doing audio updates on air at 93.3FM and 1230AM. There are 16 teams in the tournament and games will run from 9am to 7:30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the VHS gymnasium.
VALDEZ CHEERLEADERS TO COMPETE DURING ELKS TOURNAMENT

This weekend the VHS cheerleaders will have their first cheer competition of the year during the Elks Basketball Tournament. The Valdez cheerleading team, as well as the cheerleading teams around the state of Alaska, will be judged throughout the weekend on the sideline performance cheers and their half time dance routine. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday during the awards ceremony.

Students do not have school on Tuesday, February 7th for parent-teacher conferences and Friday, February 10th for a teacher in-service training day.

BUCS DO WELL AT SKI MEET IN HOMER
Courtesy of VHS Ski Coach Pete Toye – The Buc ski team made a very long road trip to Homer which paid off nicely with some very strong top-10 overall performances by a number of athletes. Valdez joined teams from Kenai, Soldotna, Nikiski, Seward, Wasilla, and host Homer for the two day event featuring classic on Friday and skate on Saturday.

LAWMAKERS WEIGH GOVERNOR'S PROPOSAL TO TRIPLE ALASKA'S GAS TAX
KTUU- Alaska drivers pay the lowest per gallon gas tax in the country, but that may soon change. Lawmakers are again taking up a proposal from the governor to triple the tax rate for highway, aviation, and marine fuels.

VHS BOYS HAVE SOLID PERFORMANCE AT HUSKY INVITE
The boys varsity team competed in the Husky Invitational this past weekend in Kotzebue. The Bucs first game of the tournament was against Unalaska last Thursday.

LADY BUCS FINISH SECOND IN SEAHAWK CLASSIC
The VHS girls varsity team traveled to Seward for a tournament this past weekend. Last Thursday the Lady Bucs competed in their first game against the home town Seahawks.

ALASKA MARIJUANA REGULATORS REJECT PLAN TO ALLOW IN-STORE CONSUMPTION
KTUU- Alaska was set to become the first state to allow cannabis use in stores, but on Thursday a regulatory board rejected the plan with a 3-2 vote in the state's capital city. The rejected proposal would not have actually allowed licensed dispensaries to allow smoking or consumption of edible marijuana on-site but instead would have allowed local governments to decide for themselves if that should happen.

UNIVERSITY REPORT FINDS 'UNACCEPTABLY HIGH' RATES OF ALASKA STUDENTS ENROLLING IN REMEDIAL CLASSES
ADN- A University of Alaska report found that an average of 74 percent of students who graduated from a subgroup of five state high schools had to take at least one remedial class when they enrolled at UA, even after many has already passed a comparative class in high school.
