TRAGEDY AT VALDEZ HIGH SCHOOL PROMPTS SWIFT RESPONSE FROM SCHOOL DISTRICT
At approximately 12:26 pm Saturday, Valdez Fire and Police Dispatch received a report of a 16-year old female found unresponsive in the Valdez High School pool family locker room. An off-duty certified lifeguard called for medical assistance and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Responders provided advanced life support care and transported the young woman by ambulance to Providence Valdez Medical Center. She was medevaced to Anchorage in critical condition. Superintendent Jim Nygaard met with counselors and staff early Monday morning to make sure the school district was equipped to address the situation with students and provide support for students and parents.

CHASE, BACZUK, AND FANNIN CHOSEN FOR ALL STATE CHOIR
Last weekend Chugiak and West Anchorage High school hosted the 2015 All State Music Festival. The festival is an annual event where high school musicians audition to participate as members of a select statewide band, choral or orchestra music ensemble. This year VHS students Emily Chase (Alto 2), Hali Baczuk (Alto 1), and Isaac Fannin (Bass 2) were selected to be part of the All State mixed choir group. There were 130 vocalists chosen from 690 vocal auditions submitted from around the state of Alaska. The students traveled up to Anchorage last Wednesday and took part in two days of rehearsal to prepare for the gala concert on Saturday at West Anchorage High School. For the very first time the gala performance, in its entirety, will be televised on GCI channel one, 3:30pm on Thanksgiving Day.

BEWARE FAKE 'TROOPERS' EXTORTING FINES BY PHONE
AK Dispatch- Anchorage police are warning people not to fall victim to a phone scam in which residents are called by people claiming to be Alaska State Troopers to extort fraudulent “fines” from them. Police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said officers have received four reports of the scam this week, involving significant losses by the victims.

There are currently four seats available, with two incumbent directors seeking reappointment. The United Way of Valdez is an all volunteer board that is dedicated to supporting non-profit organizations within our local communities.
