VALDEZ VETERANS RECOGNIZED
Last weekend was Military Appreciation Weekend in Valdez. Military personnel from around the state participated in various events.  A Military Appreciation Ceremony was held Saturday and three Valdez veterans were recognized.  Honor Awards were given to Sergeant Major Jeff Koontz, Petty Officer First Class Charles Sasse, and Sergeant Edward "Mike" Meller.  READ STORY

WEST END OF EAST PIONEER DRIVE CLOSED UNTIL JUNE 4TH

Expect the west end of the street to remain closed until approximately Saturday June 4th. Business access will be maintained by entering Pioneer Drive from the Richardson Highway. No through traffic or business access is allowed through Eagle’s Rest RV Park.

VALDEZ EXPERIENCES RARE THUNDERSTORM

Residents of Valdez are accustomed to rain and massive snow storms, but thunder and lightning are quite rare.  Sunday's storm brought several hours of both thunder and lightening, along with hail for some areas.

BROWN BEARS IN MINERAL CREEK SUBDIVISION
A brown bear sow and 3 cubs have been spotted walking around in the Mineral Creek Subdivision near Porcupine Street, Robe River Drive, and near the Hospital property. They may still be in the area. The mother bear is on high alert due to some of the crowds that have gathered in the area.  Be cautious and do NOT approach the bears.

 CELEBRATION OF LIFE
FOR JUDY LEVSHAKOFF

A Celebration of Life for Judy Levshakoff will be held this Saturday, June 4th at 4pm in the Valdez Eagles Lodge.  The Ladies Auxiliary will provide food and you may also bring a dish to share.  In lieu of flowers, donations may  be made to the FOE Diabetes Research Center in Judy's memory.  SEE ANNOUNCEMENT

ALASKA STATE ELKS YOUTH CAMP
FREE OPPORTUNITY

Valdez Elks Lodge #2537 would like to send 10 kids from Valdez to our Elks Youth Camp (near Palmer, AK) this summer. The program is free!  
Please apply by June 17th.
Girls' Week is July 24 to 29.
Boys' Week is July 31 to August 5th.

The camp is open to children ages 9 to 13 at the time they arrive at camp.

FIRST ALASKA IBIS SIGHTING HAS BIRDERS GOING 'BALLISTIC'
KHNS- An unusual bird was spotted in two separate Southeast towns on the same day last week. The ibises were a rare treat that has left bird experts scratching their heads, wondering why these southern birds have landed in Alaska.  READ STORY

KTUU- A University of Alaska-Anchorage researcher wants to put fungus in the walls of your home. Really. Dr. Philippe Amstislavski, a university professor and environmental scientist, said he is using Alaskan mushrooms to create biodegradable insulation for Arctic infrastructure.  READ STORY

VAC is having a FREE BBQ and bonfire this Tuesday, May 31st from 6-8pm.  The event will be held on the beach at Dock Point Pavilion and will feature something to burn, art to share and acoustic instruments.  Bring a dish to share and learn how you can become involved with the Arts Council.  SEE FLYER
