 Valdez Fish Derbies is holding a drawing for a Pink Salmon Derby Charter for up to six people. This drawing is for Kids 5 through 16 only, but the winner will have to be accompanied by a minimum of 2 adults. Enter at Prospector before Tuesday, July 19th at 5pm for a chance to win. Kids Pink Derby Charter will be for Saturday, July 23rd.

 BAKED ALASKA: HEAT RECORDS SHATTERED ACROSS THE STATE
USA Today- Heat records have been shattered this week in Alaska, typically the USA's coldest state. Deadhorse, located near the coast of the Arctic Ocean, skyrocketed to a record 85 degrees Wednesday, the warmest temperature ever recorded in that area, the National Weather Service said.

VALDEZ SOCIOECONOMIC INDICATORS REPORT
WORKFORCE & EARNINGS
According to a report commissioned by the City of Valdez, between 2004 and 2014, total employment wages increased from $94.9 million to $119.9 million (26%). However, measured in inflation adjusted dollars, total employment wages in Valdez are slightly below the level needed to have kept pace with inflation over the last decade. Total wages of $119.9 million in 2014 are about equal to 2004 wages of $122.8 million (in 2014 dollars).  For the Valdez-Cordova Census Area, 40% of all workers (3,048) in 2013 were non-residents and 19% of total worker wages ($42.2 million) in the census area went to non-residents.

The theme of this year's Women's Silver Salmon Derby is "Country Western" and this year's custom shirt is for sale now at the Valdez Fish Derbies weigh-in station, 4-8pm daily, then Noon-8pm July 23rd. The design this year was hand drawn by Rhonda Wegner Taylor. The Women's Silver Salmon Derby is Saturday, August 13th with the opening ceremony Friday, August 12th.

KAYAKERS EXPLORE ALASKA'S NEWLY REVEALED CLASS V GORGE
National Geographic- Todd Wells led a first descent kayaking expedition through the Chitina River headwaters in Alaska. “Just a decade or two ago, the Logan Glacier used to cover this canyon,” Wells says. “Because of climate change and because of the recession of all these glaciers in Alaska, the Logan Glacier has retreated farther up into the mountains and opened up an entrance to the canyon that we’ve now been able to access.”

COMPOSERS EXPLORE WILD SOUNDS OF ALASKA PARKS
ADN- Texas composer Stephen Lias is guiding nine other music writers on tours of Denali National Park and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve this month. It's the fifth year of Lias' "Composing in the Wilderness" program, in which the composers trek into Alaska wild sites and are expected to come up with something ready to be rehearsed and performed as soon as they come out of the country.

SILVER SALMON DERBY STARTS THIS SATURDAY, JULY 23rd

The Valdez Silver Derby features a $15,000 cash Grand Prize for the largest Silver, $5,000 cash for 2nd place and $2,000 for 3rd place. In addition to daily 1st and 2nd place prizes, all anglers who purchase a derby ticket have a chance to win $10,000 cash in a drawing at the end of the season.

VALDEZ FISH DERBIES SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
 
Interested in helping with Valdez Fish Derbies? We need volunteers to help weigh-in fish at the weigh-in station. Judy and Denny will hold a training 4pm this Friday at Weigh-in Station kitty corner from Harbor Masters office. Come find out what it's all about. It's a great way to meet folks, be a part of the derbies and there are some great incentives. Stop by weigh-in Friday at 4pm or call 255-5680. 

COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND BUILD NEXT WEEK

The Valdez Community Playground will have a ground breaking ceremony on July 26th at 6pm followed by a hand print tile workshop until 8pm.  Leave a lasting mark on our community build playground!  There is still time to register for the build.  Check out valdezplayground.org/volunteer.
