Jacob Marquardt- 1st Place Silver Derby
WINNING SILVER SALMON CAUGHT JUST BEFORE END OF DERBY
The top three fish in the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby were caught from shore. Jacob Marquardt of Valdez reeled in his 1st place 17.52 pound silver on September 1st in the Boat Harbor. John Neitzeke of Grand Rapids, Minnesota reeled in his 2nd place 17.26 pound silver September 1st at Allison Point. Dawn Osmonson-Sturm also reeled in her 3rd place fish at Allison Point. Osmonson-Sturm is from Waukee, Iowa and her 17.18 pound silver was reeled in August 30th. First place in the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby is $15,000 cash, 2nd place is $5,000 and 3rd place is $2,000.
This final Big Prize Friday was won by Dawn Sturm of Waukee, Iowa. Sturm reeled in a 16.28 pound silver to net herself the $500 Big Prize Friday cash award.
In the Halibut Derby, Chris Steiger won the $500 Captains prize and Donna Waller of Easy Freeze sold the winning ticket. In the Silver Salmon Derby, it was Jamie Kompkoff of Easy Freeze that won the $500 prize for selling the winning ticket and no Captain’s prize since the winning fish was caught at the Small Boat Harbor.

In the Valdez Fish Derbies, everyone who purchases a daily ticket is entered to win $10,000 cash at the end of the season. Those purchasing season tickets have five entries in the $10,000 drawing. At the end of the season, all the entries are put into a barrel and a winning ticket is chosen. This year Wade Neske of Minnesota was the winner. KIDS CLUB HOSTS INTERVIEW SANDY JOHNS
Members of the KVAK Kids Club had the opportunity to sit down and interview Sandy Johns of the Alyeska Marine Terminal and ask about the Ballast Water Treatment Plant across the Bay. Check out the interview this Wednesday, September 7th during the 9am, Noon and 6pm news hours on 93.3FM and 12:30AM. You’ll understand why KVAK staffers are worried about losing their jobs after hearing how exceptional these kids do as hosts of a radio news show.
SPEED LIMIT INCREASED ON SECTIONS OF THE RICHARDSON HWY
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) increased the speed limit on the Richardson Highway from Eielson Air Force Base to Fairbanks. Previously, the route was 55 MPH.
From Fairbanks, south to North Pole, the speed limit increased to 60 MPH. From North Pole, south to Eielson, the speed limit increased to 65 MPH.

UNITS 13B AND 13D COMMUNITY HUNT MOOSE BAG LIMIT CHANGES BY EMERGENCY ORDER
(Glennallen) – The bag limits for moose in the Copper Basin Community Subsistence Harvest Hunt (CM300) in Game Management Units 13B and 13D are scheduled to change by emergency order from one bull moose to one bull moose with spike-fork antlers, or 50-inch antlers, or antlers with four or more brow tines on at least one side. The change will take effect at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, September 4, 2016. This new bag limit for the community hunt in Units 13B and 13D matches the bag limit for Unit 13E that was announced on August 24, 2016.
