WRITE-IN CANDIDATES FROM THE VALDEZ MUNICIPAL ELECTION
Tom Hanks and Prince may not have been candidates in this year’s Valdez Municipal Election, but they both won write-in votes. The 2016 election had a total of 150 write-in votes. Other write-ins include Bugs Bunny, Crazy Mike, Mickey Mouse, and Someone Else.

LOCAL STUDENT NAMED SEMIFINALIST IN U.S. PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Michael "Mickey" Radotich, a graduating senior at Valdez High School, has been named one of 689 semifinalists in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Of the 54 candidates from Alaska, seven have been named semifinalists. Two of the seven will be chosen and flown to Washington, DC for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in events and activities.
STATE PROJECTS DECLINE IN VALDEZ-CORDOVA CENSUS AREA RESIDENTS
Alaska's population will rise to 899,825 residents by 2045, while the number of people living in the Valdez-Cordova census area will fall to 7,600, state labor officials are projecting.
EAGLE HIT SMALL PLANE IN ALASKA BEFORE IT BURST INTO FLAMES, KILLING FOUR
A small airplane hit a bald eagle before it crashed and burst into flames just north of Anchorage last month, killing all four people on board, authorities said Wednesday.
