Building Better Schools Programme Update
Holy Child Kindergarten Centre of Excellence is Complete
Holy Child Kindergarten Centre of Excellence is Ghana’s 2nd Centre of Excellence and is based at Holy Child College of Education in the Western Region. This kindergarten has a dual purpose and will provide quality facilities for local children whilst also showcasing best practice to student teachers at Holy Child College of Education, supporting our teacher training programme.

The construction programme was completed in February and the school looks stunning - Ayekoo team! (Well done). You can view some more school images here or see  how the construction progressed on our dedicated blog.
OLA Kindergarten Centre of Excellence Official Opening Ceremony

The official opening ceremony took place in January and brought together parents, children, OLA College of Education lecturers and Sabre Trust staff to celebrate this exciting new school. Amongst the invited guests were Professor Anamoah-Mensah, renowned educationalist and former Vice Chancellor of University of Education, Winneba, Felix Ansah, Assistant Director of Education for Cape Coast Metropolis, Professor Ernest Kofi Davies, Deputy Director of the Institute of Education at the University of Cape Coast and Margaret Lemaire, Principal of Holy Child College of Education. The Special Guest of Honour was Sonya Hinton, Sabre’s Education Advisor, who cut the ribbon and was presented with a Citation of Honour by the OLA College of Education Principal, Sister Elizabeth Amoako-Arhen.
Work has started at Ahobre Early Years Complex

We are delighted to announce that construction has started on our first Early Years Complex, in Ahobre, in the Jomoro District of Ghana’s Western Region. The school, funded by our new partnership with the Ghana Drillers Charity, will be a 6 classroom Complex for Nursery through to Primary Year 3. The project has already reached the first milestone, curing and casting the foundations for the kindergarten block. You can follow the project on our dedicated blog.
Transformational Teacher Training Programme Update

Members of our Fast-track Transformational Teacher Training (FTTT) team were invited to attend two exciting meetings in Accra in December. The first was with Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the second meeting was the official launch of T-TEL (Transforming Teacher Education and Learning). These events provided a great platform for the team to share the excellent work happening in the FTTT classrooms with a wider audience. Find out more information about these meetings here.
Western Region Teacher Training

Training workshops have continued to be delivered to a high standard by the Holy Child College of Education lecturers this term, with the completion of two Top Up Training Workshops. The first Top Up Training workshop focused on pupil assessment and key mathematical skills for kindergarten. Find out more about this exciting workshop here.

We were thrilled to receive a visit from Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) in February as part of their planned collaboration with Sabre on an independent impact evaluation of the programme, focusing on how the student teachers from the College of Education get on as Newly Qualified Teachers in their own classrooms. Read more about IPA’s visit here.

Central Region Teacher Training

Excellent transformation of the Central Region classrooms has continued this term, helped by two Top Up Training workshops delivered to the teachers by the OLA College of Education Lecturers.

The student teachers have continued their training with a second Intensive Training Workshop, where they were introduced to the phonics programme for KG1 and KG2. Click here to find out more about what the student teachers got up to at the workshop.
Hard Graft for High Tech – TechAid Volunteer tip to Ghana

In February, 12 volunteers flew out to Ghana to complete their 18 month Exertis #TechAid fundraising project to help build OLA Kindergarten Centre of Excellence. Participants included Microsoft as the headline sponsor, Targus, OneCom, Digital Phone Company and Exertis. The group had a fantastic time in Ghana and with support from 4 local artisans they built an outside learning area which included 8 blackboard tyre tables, a maze and a canoe. You can read more about their time in Ghana here.

Fantastic Fundraisers - The Strand Spartans
In December, our youngest supporters, the Strand Spartans, raised a phenomenal £1,406 with the release of their very own Christmas single, Strand Aid. We loved this original idea and their tag #kidshelpingkids. A big thank you to all of the Spartans and good luck for the rest of the football season!
