We all know that New Year resolutions do not work. It has been statistically proven, but more importantly every one of us can recall a resolution that we made that did not stick. Many of us can reach back to a mere few weeks ago to discover this lapse. A colleague of mine introduced a new concept to me a few weeks ago that has resonated with me.
What if in lieu of a laundry list of resolutions you had a theme for the year. A theme in the form of one or two key words, or a catchphrase that is your signature “tune” for the year. The words would help you define if you are on track any given day, week, or month.
For example, your theme word could be “healthful”. The intention of that would be to gauge whether any particular activity is healthful. “Am I eating healthfully today?” (Tipping my hat to my English teacher mother, she cringed every time she heard “eat healthy”) If I don’t exercise today is that living healthfully? Is going to bed at a decent time healthful?
In litmus testing your theme against what you are doing, you can quickly assess and continue what you are doing or get back on track.
The other benefit is that there is no colossal failure with theme words. Every day you get a new chance to live by that theme. You can choose one theme word for your professional life and one for your personal life. You can change them up each quarter or stick with the same one all year.
I am not suggesting that Your Theme takes the place of your personal or professional goals. Goals which are thoughtful, written down, and created in a SMART format are the most likely to be realized. However, a theme is the shortcut version of your goals. An expedient self - check in. The possibilities are simple and extraordinary. (SMART= Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. More about that on another day.)
So what are some theme words that might support you in 2014?
- Live Healthfully
- Plan Ahead
- Live Large
- Patience (one suggested to me by my friend!)
- Create Opportunities
- Have Fun
- Build Relationships
- Capitalize Opportunities
- Expand Possibilities
- Think Positively
- Get Fit
- Be Prepared
- Push Boundaries
- Be Kind
- Be Compassionate
- Define Expectations (with work team)
Those of you who have been in my training classes, know that these are Quad 2 Activities: Important / Not Urgent. These are the activities on which you need to focus.
So, think creatively about your 2014 theme. Print it and post it on your office wall, make it your screen saver, create a daily reminder of it on your phone. Sing it and see how the melody of your life changes.
To all of you, I wish a happy and productive new year.
