EuroMeSCo examines the main challenges affecting the Sahel region

On 26 October in Beirut, researchers from the EuroMeSCo network and practitioners gathered to discuss the main challenges affecting the Sahel region and the stability of the Mediterranean region.

Members of the research group, coordinated by Dr Dalia Gahem-Yazbeck, El Erian Fellow at Carnegie Middle East, presented their initial research findings on the growing jihadist threat, the impact on Algeria as well as the role of the country in the region, the effectiveness of foreign interventions and finally challenges related to climate and demographic trends.

The event was organised by Carnegie Middle East Center, in the framework of the EuroMeSCo ENI Project, co-funded by the EU and the IEMed.

The final research findings will be published in a Joint Policy Study, to be released in February 2017.

New Dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean
10 November, Athens

MITVIM - The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies in cooperation with ELIAMEP and the IEMed organises a workshop with the objective to present and discuss the initial findings of the research group on changing dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The aim would be to analyse various factors that may constitute both opportunities and threats to an increasing cooperation between some Eastern Mediterranean countries, such as newfound energy reserves and the war in Syria.

The event is organised in the framework of the EuroMeSCo ENI Project.

Participation to this workshop is upon invitation only.
An ENP of Reviews? What role for the EU in a shifting neighbourhood?
30 November, Budapest

The seminar, gathering participants from both shores of the Mediterranean, will analyse the development of the European Neighbourhood Policy and the hindrances to its implementation. In the light of growing global challenges, including unsolved conflicts in Europe and Middle East, radicalism, as well as socio-economic instability, it will try to draw up scenarios for the adjustment of the ENP and EU role.
The seminar is organised by the Center for Economic and Regional Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with EuroMeSCo and IEMed.
