Muslim Women and Communities
against Gender Islamophobia in Society

Reporting Diversity!

Journalists and news media have a vital role to play in exposing the realities of social injustice, racism, and Islamophobia and are well placed to make a difference.

Throughout this report, there are tips and advice to journalists and news media on how to approach this problem, particularly as it affects Muslim women.

It's been coordinated by Media Diversity Institute Global (MDIG) and produced by a task force led by journalist Aidan White (former FT and Guardian journalist, Ethical Journalism Network) and with the contributions of Mariam Marakeshy (Filmmaker, Multimedia Reporter), and Shada Islam (EUObserver Magazine).

Tell the story of Muslims and Muslim women in Europe

“We think the guidelines could help journalists and media management to be able to more effectively tell the story of Muslims and Muslim women in Europe”. Aidan White explains the aims and contents of the latest MAGIC publication in this video:

Editorial guidelines

The guidelines tackle the need for more socially diverse and inclusive newsrooms and offer to journalists and editors a comprehensive toolkit on key ethical values, choosing sources of information, avoiding stereotypes, being aware of double standards, combating hate speech…
Workshops in universities

The MAGIC project started the training of communication students on reporting diversity with two workshops at the Sant-Louis University and Vrije Universiteit in Brussels attended by up to 45 students.

Representatives of the MAGIC consortium Roxane Biedermann and Layla Azzouzi presented the project and underlined the important role CSOs play in changing media narratives. Shada Islam, the editor of the EUObserver magazine and contributor to the "Report Diversity! Guidelines", provided background and practical tips and recommendations.
