PERTH ROYAL SHOW

This year, the SMRC worked with the crew at Greenfingers who produced a magnificent sustainable garden. The garden was built using an SMRC blend of compost from Nutrarich and also featured many other recycled and sustainable elements.

Logs from the Regional Resource Recovery Centre’s Green Waste Facility were used to build a fantastic patio and tumbled glass was also used as a mulch around some wooden seating which, was also milled from logs from the Green Waste Facility. Educational banners were on the display telling the waste to compost story and SMRC staff also attended the event. We look forward to being involved in the event again next year. The garden is well worth the visit!

CARBON CREDITS

Under the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) the SMRC was issued with 33,187 Kyoto compliant Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU’s) in September  for offsets achieved at the Waste Composting Facility (WCF).

Each ACCU represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e). which can be sold to people and businesses wishing to offset liability under the carbon pricing mechanism.

The waste composting project generates carbon credits by avoiding methane emissions at landfill and was declared an eligible offsets project by the Clean Energy Regulator under section 27 of the CFI Act. The project accords with the Diversion of Legacy Waste to an Alternative Waste Treatment Facility methodology determination issued in January this year.

The project baseline is the methane that would have been emitted from a landfill if that landfill had received the waste in the absence of the waste composting project.

The approach to calculating greenhouse gas emissions abatement is to estimate the methane production avoided from depositing waste into landfill. Only the methane emissions that are avoided after the capture and destruction of methane at the landfill are counted. Energy and fuel consumption used in the composting process are also accounted for and the entire methodology independently audited by an auditor registered under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Regulations 2008.

Recycling Right does more that conserve finite resources and allow us to make new products from old, it also saves thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gases going to atmosphere each year and contributing to global warming. Do the right thing put it in the right bin.

RECYCLE RIGHT SUSTAINABLE GARDEN AT THE REGIONAL RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTRE

We are currently building the Recycle Right Sustainable Garden as part of the tour route at the RRRC. The garden will also be a central point for staff, who may not normally see each other and work at different facilities, to have the opportunity to interact with each other. There is also the benefit of taking home some fresh vegetables if staff wish to contribute a small amount of time in the garden.

There has been a fantastic response so far and we look forward to making the area into a really nice space at the RRRC!
