The World Week for Peace in Palestine-Israel

September 18th - 24th

Is your congregation involved in the World Week for Peace in Palestine-Israel (WWPPI) this year? It's not too late to get involved. The week's message is that:
  • It's time for Palestinians and Israelis to share a just peace.
  • It's time for freedom from occupation.
  • It's time for equal rights.
  • It's time for the healing of wounded souls.
How to get involved? The good news is that there are many different levels of involvement, most of which are very easy to organise. You can: Tell us! If you are planning to use any of these resources or to commemorate WWPPI in some other way, please complete our survey, so we can track Australian church involvement. Click here

Women's Boat to Gaza leaving soon

The Women’s Boat to Gaza, a campaign of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition plans to set sail towards Gaza in mid-September with all women delegates and crew. In doing they hope to raise the issue of the ongoing illegal blockade of Gaza.

Members of the crew include women involved in the United Church of Canada's United Network for Justice & Peace in Palestine / Israel as well as Nobel Peace Laureate and Northern Ireland peace activist, Mairead Maguire and Green Party New Zealand Member of Parliament Marama Davidson.

A United Nations report states that Gaza will be uninhabitable by 2020. Homes, schools and hospitals have been destroyed. 97% of water is not drinkable and electricity is reduced to a few hours per day. “Our project, supported by many women’s groups in Gaza and by civil society around the world, seeks to bring a message of solidarity and hope. In order to change this horrifying prediction the siege must be immediately lifted” says Ellen Huttu Hansson, spokesperson for Ship to Gaza Sweden.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has asked for the support of members of the European Parliament for the Women’s Boat to Gaza and will seek assurances from all governments that they will protect and not obstruct its peaceful mission of solidarity to the besieged Palestinian people of Gaza.

Lutherans call
for end to US aid
to Israel

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has become the latest US denomination to take economic action against the Israeli occupation.

At its triennial assembly last week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the four million-member church, one of the largest in the US, voted on two separate resolutions targeting Israel’s occupation and human rights abuses, passing each by a landslide.

The first resolution calls for the end of US aid to Israel until it ceases violations of international human rights norms, specifically the ongoing construction of settlements on occupied Palestinian land.
