WCC general secretary reflects
on peace in Palestine and Israel

"The Palestine Israel Ecumenical Forum of the World Council of Churches (WCC) continues to call on member churches, faith-based communities, and civil society organisations around the world to support an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine and a just peace for all in Palestine and Israel.

During the World Week of Peace in Palestine and Israel 2016, observed between 18th - 24th September, congregations and individuals around the globe who share a hope for justice will take peaceful actions to create a common international public witness."

WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit recently answered questions on a lasting peace in Palestine and Israel. To continue reading, click here. Dr Tveit will be in Australia in October. Contact PIEN for more details on his program.

2017 World Week for Peace
in Palestine-Israel

How did your church mark the World Week for Peace in Palestine- Israel? Brunswick Uniting Church had three stations where people could reflect on Breaking Down Barriers. As someone from the congregation described one of the stations:
During worship we wrote Beatitudes for Peace remembering that, in Matthew's gospel, Jesus said 'Blessed are the peacemakers for they will called the children of God'. A selection of these was read as our Prayers of the People. These prayers and the full set of Beatitudes are available on our website. Click here for the beatitudes in full.

A Female Mayor in the Heart of the Middle East

from AsiaN

"Asian countries provide female mayors and governors like in Europe. According to researches, currently, fewer than 5% of the world’s mayors are women and women make up an average of just 20% local councilors worldwide. Mrs. Vera Baboun is one of these female mayors of the Asian continent as the Mayor of Bethlehem.

Her great works effect the role of woman in the political system of Middle East. In our interview, we talked about her political, academic and cultural initiatives which cover wide range of significant works."
