Freshly picked Sauvignon Blanc grapes shine in the morning sun - Aug 30th, 2014

HARVEST SEASON
The 2014 growing season has been near ideal, raising growers’ hopes of a high-quality vintage here in Sonoma County.  Our vineyards have shaped up nicely with mild days and few cold spells or heat spikes. Sonoma County growers mostly agree this year’s crop will be smaller than last year’s record-breaking crop of 271,000 tons, which followed at 2012 harvest 267,000 tons, but still quite bountiful. Previous years were much lower.  So to have three years of large, but more importantly, high quality, crops like this is a wine country dream.  And the slightly lower yield is also beneficial so as not to strain the wineries capabilities. While the state’s drought conditions are a continuing concern, some Sonoma County growers said it did not present an immediate obstacle for harvest compared to other wine regions.

OUR TASTING ROOM

The mornings are crisp and clear, the aroma of grapes in the air, and the vines are beginning to relax a little after another productive season. We, too, have had a productive season, not sure about the now relaxing part though!  We have some new additions to the winery, Brix (pictured below) who shows promise in the irrigation department. Gina and Bella, (pictured below with Liz and Gianna) who will be heading up Rodent Control.

With our 2014 vintage now creating it's magic in the cellar, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you for your support and friendship.  Sharing our wines, and our home on Dry Creek, with all of you is the highlight of our experience.  We are so greatful for all the stories, laughs and celebrations you share with us.  We hope this note finds you happy and healthy and of course with a bottle of 32 Winds...and that we see you soon.  Happy Fall.

Cheers!

A SPECIAL THANKS
to Mayacama Golf Club Executive Chef, Scott Pikey, for preparing Ed Mascarin and guest's freshly caught salmon, which was paired with our Compass Winds Sauvignon Blanc. We were thrilled to host our Oklahoman guests at the winery for a lovely picnic complete with a game of Bocce... Ed lost the game to one of the lovely ladies pictured below.

A VISIT FROM
MINI-MASCARIN
We were very happy to have Steven Mascarin, Ed's grandson, visit us for part of the summer. Steven was very helpful inspecting grapes, monitoring creek activity, and keeping the bocce court alive.
WINE COUNTRY NEWS
SUSTAINABILITY IN DRY CREEK VALLEY

Sustainability In Dry Creek Valley What does sustainable mean to us? For the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley, it means being a passionate advocate for the Dry Creek Valley AVA and ensuring we’re giving back to the environment as much as we’re gleaning from it. It also means we’re assessing and maintaining that delicate balance between environmental impact, viability, and economic growth and taking a leadership position when it comes to sustainability practices. To that end, WDCV is taking the lead on Sonoma County Winegrowers’ countrywide initiative to become 100% sustainable within the next five years. To achieve this precedent, we recently appointed third-generation winegrower David Mounts of Mounts Family Winery as chair of our new Sustainability Committee. Mr Mounts will help steer a contingent of 150 + growers and 65 wineries here in Dry Creek Valley to implement a three-phase sustainability initiative that will ultimately get all Dry Creek Valley wineries certified “sustainable” through credible third-party verification and certification programs. It’s a monumental task and we’re glad to have such a dynamic steward at the helm of this project.
