LOCAL PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT
A consortium led by Lend Lease has secured the contract to transform the 20-hectare precinct at Darling Harbour in Sydney following the signing of agreements with the New South Wales government.
The plan includes Australia’s largest fully integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment facilities; a new hotel of up to 900 rooms; and the development of Haymarket into a cosmopolitan neighbourhood with a mix of shops, cafes and high-tech industry and start-up businesses.
The event facilities and hotel are expected to be complete end of 2016, while the redevelopment of the residential and mixed-use development in the Haymarket will be based on market forces and staged into the early 2020s.

Could you indicate what makes your business competitive in your industry and local area? The Sydney Kings are Sydney’s only National Basketball League (NBL) side. As the second most popular sport globally with 213 countries playing and 450 million players worldwide, basketball is the 2nd highest participation sport in Australia with over 1 million participants. The Sydney Kings play in the NBL season from October to March. The games are played at family friendly times on either Friday nights, Saturdays, or Sundays with all games broadcast on NBL.tv and ONE HD. Sydney Kings games provide Sydney’s best VIP sporting experience with unrivalled corporate hospitality including pre and post-game functions. Entertainment is the name of the game and Sydney Kings games are always a fun family friendly spectacle held in a superb indoor arena close to the all forms of public transport within a short walk from Darling Harbour and the CBD.
What changes have you observed in the local area and business community during this time? Over the last 23 years the Haymarket precinct has become one of Sydney’s premier business, dining and shopping precincts. Being in such close proximity to the Darling Harbour and World Square developments has created many new business opportunities for Haymarket based businesses. The Sydney Kings have worked closely with business owners and managers in the Haymarket precinct to create many beneficial opportunities and will continue to do so now that the Sydney Entertainment Centre has again been confirmed as the Kings home venue for the 2013/14 season. Business owners in the Haymarket precinct have embraced the many opportunities that having a world-class sporting team on their door step has provided. With the advent of social media as well as mobile and wireless technology the Haymarket business community has more opportunities than ever before. Thanks to the great work of the Haymarket Chamber we can all work together to take advantage of all of the opportunities that change can bring.
Why do you think the Haymarket Chamber attracts so many members? Being relatively new Haymarket Chamber members the Sydney Kings have been extremely pleased to be so warmly embraced by the Haymarket Chamber family. It has become apparent that one of the reasons that the membership numbers are so high is because of the genuine sense of community that the Haymarket Chamber provides. We were delighted to find that there was such a diverse array of companies in attendance at the recent Chamber Networking event held at Mamak Village and the event had a real family feel to it which was fantastic. Everyone warmly welcomed us during the evening and if that experience is representative of the Haymarket Chamber as a whole then we look forward to meeting with and working with you all !
Could you describe Haymarket in three words? Vibrant. Active. Progressive.
What do you see as happening in 2013-14? I see the Kings winning the NBL title for the first time since 2005 and celebrating with a ticker tape parade down Dixon St !
Any advice to other businesses? Embrace mobile technology as 60% of Australians have smart phones/tablets - and this number is growing fast. Maximise your use of social media to keep your customers engaged. Use online video to market your business – we are all Youtube stars waiting to happen !
What is one of your favourite quotes? “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” MICHAEL JORDAN.
