4K Alumni Newsletter Fall 2015

Dear 4K Alumni,
Welcome to the 4K Alumni Quarterly Newsletter! The UCF staff will keep you updated on program improvements, ways to stay involved, and how the 4K program continues to change lives.

With our 2015 season all wrapped up, we are spending the fall reflecting on how we can improve our program. Each year participants give us tons of feedback...the good and the bad. We take these comments to heart and will keep you updated on the progress we make each year.

Now that you're on the other side of the 4K family, we want to make sure you're still given the opportunity to change lives. Make sure you check out the ways to stay involved in the 4K program or other UCF programs this upcoming year.

There are a lot of exciting happenings coming out of Baltimore in 2016, keep your eyes peeled.
Cancer changes lives…so do YOU!

4K Program Improvements

Changes made in 2015
In past year we have made a lot of big improvements to the 4K for Cancer program. We’ve been listening all these years to the ideas alumni bring to our attention, and finally had the bandwidth to make major strides.
  • Ride and Run Support: UCF Staff travel with the teams for the first 3 days of their experience in order to provide support and act as a resource for teams.
  • Routes: In 2015, program coordinators scouted, researched, and mapped all of the team routes across the country through Map My Fitness.
  • Safety: We have taken a number of steps to ensure the safety of our riders and runners during their summer.
    • Required pre-trip physicals
    • Provided Road IDs
    • Extended training ride to 10 miles
    • Created cycling safety guide and required test
    • Provided an 18 week training program for the ride
    • Provided a 20 week training program for the run
    • Required rear and front bike lights
    • Provided two sets of van racks for shuttling
    • Extended training days
    • Provided CPR/First Aid certification

Events

  • Third Annual Beard Off Kicking off November 1st. Relive the glory days of the 4K, when you could grow out all your hair and nobody cared. The Beard Off started as a bet among a group of friends who wanted to see who could grow the best beard. It grew gloriously and has raised over $40,000 for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults in just two years. Stay tuned for more information to come.
  • 'Tis the Season to...Change Lives! UCF's Annual Holiday Gift Drive. Get together with your 4K team and adopt a family this holiday! Each year, UCF works with patient navigators and social workers from local Baltimore area hospitals to identify families facing a cancer diagnosis who would benefit from some assistance in making the holidays brighter. If you are interested in adopting a family for the holidays, please contact Julie Lanahan.

UCF Updates

Patient Navigator Allie Isaacson is pioneering our young adult patient navigation program at CNMC, a pediatric hospital in Washington, D.C.
  • Key to Keys, our foremost UCF Experience, is a weeklong bike ride from Baltimore, MD to Key West, FL from April 9th – 16th, 2016. Applications open Oct. 5th, 2015.

How We Change Lives

Gino DeFilippo is no stranger to UCF. What some people might not know is how many ways Gino has been involved in UCF programs and how meaningful those programs have been for him.
  • His journey started with Allie Gubin, his patient navigator at Johns Hopkins, when he was in treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML);
  • After finishing treatment (and kicking cancer's butt), he laced up his running shoes with the Cancer to 5K Baltimore squad;
  • He then joined Allie to speak at CancerCON and was a finalist for a "Get Busy Living" Award;
  • Then Gino signed up for the 4K and biked across the country this summer with Team Portland (thanks to some good persuasion from Chelsea and Mitch, PDX14 Alums).
  • Now Gino is a 4K Alumnus and spreading the word about how UCF and the 4K can change lives.
