Dominican Republic Missions Trip

I strongly believe that missions trips are life changing in many ways.  My first overseas trip was 25 years ago while a student at SCS, and while there certainly was an immediate short term impact, I see now how much greater the long term impact was.  Often we get caught up in looking for immediate results and forget that God’s plans are life long, and some seeds take years or even decades to really take root and grow.
The trip was great.  It was wonderful to see young people that I have been working hard to educate and disciple challenged to live out their faith in different ways.  The kids worked very hard and never missed an opportunity to share.  A veteran missionary we worked with commented that he was impressed with our team and had seen them do great things that adult teams often did not do.  One example was giving up much of their free day to go back to the schools they had been working at in order to have more connection time with students there.
We worked with Dominican Advance, which primarily focuses on education through running schools and training adults in microeconomic endeavors.  The students did presentations in each of the classrooms, helped with painting, planting, and other construction.  They went out into local villages to pray for people, going door to door, and created numerous opportunities to interact with Dominicans through sports.
As we walked towards town one evening, a man came running out and asked if any of us played baseball.  More than half of the Mekeel baseball team was on the trip, and so with my permission, our boys (and one girl) jumped into a game with a local baseball club.
Another special memory was the relationships made with people we worked with.  Our translator, Rey, was a passionate young man whose joy for the Gospel was infectious.  Everywhere we went he sang praise songs, and our students were greatly impacted by his fearlessness and enthusiasm.
Other highlights included visiting a ministry project in an extremely poor area.  Many students had never really experienced poverty, and this was a life changing moment.  Time spent in a local church and youth group also will be remembered my many.
Thank you to all you prayed and supported us.  We are looking into ministry opportunities for next year, which may include a team to Kenya.  Currently, Mekeel teachers Hellen McKeon and Marissa Langenthal are in Kenya meeting with ministry leaders and looking into the logistics of a trip.

Alumni Spotlight: Michael Gustafson

After graduating from MCA(SCS) in 1988, I graduated from Cedarville College(OH) with a degree in youth ministry.  While I was a senior in 1992 the Lord changed my direction through a missions challenge to serve as a missionary in the former Soviet Union.  I visited Ukraine that summer and saw a people hungry for the Word of God and after studying for a few years in seminary (Baptist Bible Seminary in PA) I did an internship just outside of Moscow, Russia.  I taught the Bible in English in public schools there and worked with a church plant.  Studying the Russian language and culture gave me a greater heart for the people and desire to continue to serve there.

After returning to the US to get my masters, I  I took a teaching job at Tabernacle Christian Academy in Poughkeepsie, NY where I taught secondary Bible and Physical Education for six years, coached soccer and basketball and officiated basketball games.  It wasn't until a personal missions trip in the summer of 2002 to Italy, Russia, Ukraine, and Germany that I saw an opportunity to serve in the Ukrainian capital.  I arrived in 2003 and have lived in Kiev, Ukraine since then with only a few trips to America.

I met my wife, Rachel in Odessa, Ukraine a year later.  She is from Seattle but was also a career missionary to Ukraine with our mission(Association of Baptist for World Evangelism(ABWE)).  We were married in 2005 and have five children Elllie(9), Daniel(7), Jonathan(4), Susanna(2) and Titus(8 months).

My soccer and basketball coaches helped me understand the value of teamwork and helped develop me as a leader.  Sports continues to play a role in my ministry here.  I helped found a men's Christian basketball league with 24 teams and 300 unsaved men playing and hearing the Gospel each Saturday.  Teaching 6 years at a Christian school and now having my daughter attend one in Kyiv attests to my value of a Christian education that gave me a solid foundation for future ministry.

We serve in Ukrainian church ministry and leadership training.  I teach youth ministry(in Russian) at Kyiv Theological Seminary and also assists churches in eastern Ukraine that are ministering to those affected by the ongoing war that has killed more than ten thousand people since it started in 2014.

My dad, Carl, has visited us several times but we are still hoping that my other three alumni brothers: (Peter 1986, David 1991 and Andrew 1995) come before our next scheduled trip to the capital district in 2019.
