ALL THE GONZO NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT
Issue Six         December 30th, 2012
So what is this all about?

It is simple; my name is Jon and I am the editor of the Gonzo Multimedia daily online magazine. Now there is a weekly newsletter, once again edited by me and my trusty orange cat from a dilapidated ex-potato shed  in rural Devonshire.

You subscribed to it by opting in on the website. I hope that you all stay to join in the fun, but if it is not to your liking it is just as easy to unsubscribe again. But what a long, strange trip it is gonna be...
THE WEEK THAT'S PAST
Well the last week has, perforce, been dominated by what is euphemistically known as 'The Festive Season', and like most other folk with beards and wild staring eyes who will not see fifty again I got the Led Zeppelin Celebration Day DVD set as a present from my lovely wife. (This is not to say that my lovely wife has given out multiple copies of this excellent sonic artefact to every bloke she knows with a beard and wild staring eyes, but you know what I mean). I watched it last night and very splendid it is.

This week I also discovered the new solo album by Liam Davison of Mostly Autumn, and through him I spotified the band themselves and was mightily impressed. I think that this is going to be an ensemble that really repays investigation.

FEEDBACK
Last week's issue was the most popular yet.  Brian Reasoner from Cambridge, MA writes: "I really love your new blog/newsletter, which is really a treat to read.  It would be FANTASTIC, though, if you added links to the Gonzo USA product pages along with the ones you already have for the Gonzo UK site."

I think that is a bloody good idea, and so as of now I will do just that!

Remember, if you want more than your weekly fix of this newsletter you can check out the Gonzo Daily, which - as its name implies - does much the same as this newsletter but every day. It also features a daily poem from Thom the World Poet, and the occasional non-Gonzo rock music rambling from yours truly, plus book and gig reviews from our highly trained staff of social malcontents. And its FREE! You cannae say fairer than that!
Each week, some of you seem to recognise me. Yes, I am indeed that weird bloke off the telly who chases mythological animals. I have a day job as Director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology, and also the editor of the CFZ Blog Network, and publisher of a plethora of books about mystery animals.

MICHAEL DES BARRES DOES THE STONES
Finally..... a vide
In last week's Gonzo Weekly we had an interview with Michael Des Barres about his appearance on stage as part of a Rolling Stones tribute concert..

At the time I bemoaned the fact that no video appeared to have been taken of the event, but lo-and behold, now a shakey fan video of Michael doing a storming version of Brown Sugar has surfaced, and we couldn't wait to bring it to you.

This is what Rock and Roll should be like, and all too seldom is in these sad and mildly degenerate days.

Check it out...

THE YES CIRCULAR - ANOTHER MYSTERY TO SOLVE
The Court Circular tells interested readers about the comings and goings of members of The Royal Family. However, readers of this periodical seem interested in the comings and goings of Yes and of various alumni of this magnificant and long-standing band. Give the people what they want, I say
I have a mildly intriguing conundrum for Jon Anderson fans. This morning I was sent this video of Senor Anderson strutting his stuff somewhere in Latin America.  It's professionally filmed, and comes complete with a caption that reads: "Busco informacion de este concierto,me indican que fué filmado en el Palacio de los deportes." This translates as "Searching for information about this concert, I show that was filmed at the Palais des Sports."

The bloke who posted it is from Costa Rica, so it seems a good guess that this is where the show was filmed....unless someone knows better...

Steve Howe has been talking about the project a lot this week, and - knowing that you would be interested - I have snaffled another interview for you all:

CORKY LAING: The ongoing saga of the drummer, the academics, the opera and the ethics of genetics
Corky Laing (pictured on the left with Gonzo grande fromage Rob Ayling) is a legendary drummer. He joined Mountain just after Woodstock, and has been playing with the seminal Canadian hard rock band on and off ever since. But he has also had a rich and varied  solo career, and - in a pattern which is beginning to seem familiar - is now involved in one of the most peculiar, demanding, challenging and certainly interesting projects of his career..

I don't know what I was expecting when I sat down with my mother-in-law and the orange cat to listen to Liam Davison's album A Treasure of Well Set Jewels, but by half-way through the second track I was completely beguiled.  Liam must have a similar record collection to mine, because there are traces of all sorts of influences including (in no particular order) later period Pink Floyd, The Beatles round about 1966, and the immortal Steve Hillage.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP AT THE ROSWELL UFO FESTIVAL

London, UK - “Roswell UFO Parade & Festival Hosts Jefferson Starship Sci-Fi Extravaganza” read the headlines for the annual July 3rd event that took place in Roswell, New Mexico in 2009. Jefferson Airplane founder Paul Kantner and his legendary band Jefferson Starship and special guests, which included original Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten, performed a one-of-a-kind sci-fi concert at Pearson Auditorium in Roswell in honor of the town's famed annual parade. The group was also bestowed the honor of being the parade's 'Grand Martians' that year and rode atop a special float especially built for them. The entire concert was filmed and recorded, and in addition to such iconic hits as “White Rabbit”, “Somebody To Love”, “Volunteers”, “Wooden Ships” recorded by its forebear Jefferson Airplane (the last two penned by Kantner), a special programme of science fiction themed compositions and select recordings were performed, some for the first time ever! Now, much to the excitement of Jefferson Starship fans across the globe UK's Gonzo MultiMedia is releasing the the entire concert in an extravagant 4-CD box set.

Cristiano Roversi is an Italian musician, composer and producer. Keyboard and organ player, virtuoso bass and Chapman Grand Stick player and, in 1994, founder member of the new progressive band Moongarden, very much a vital entity to this day. Over the years he has explored other musical environments in collaborative projects such as SUBMARINE SILENCE and CAVALLI COCCHI, LANZETTI & ROVERSI as well as numerous solo projects, soundtracks and session/production/teaching work. Currently writing and playing keyboards for Mangala Vallis and producing Catafalchi Del Cyber, Cristiano has, in recent years, collaborated with many well known and respected names such as Bernardo Lanzetti, Aldo Tagliapietra, John Wetton, David Jackson, Massimo Zamboni, Flaco Biondini, Steve Hackett, Tryptic, Zef Noise & Mike Ill (ex Sweet Lizard Illtet) Silvia Orlandi, Angela Baraldi, Leonora, Roberto Tiranti and many others.....

About AntiQua: “I had wanted to dedicate myself completely to a solo album for some time now, totally free to go where I might, independent of market or stylistic pressures. A proverbial flight of fancy as it were. An album in which I could let my influences shine through without having to prove anything to anyone and one in which I didn’t have to crank up the volume. AntiQua is a strange land where time flows at a more natural pace, I don’t really know if it’s on our planet, or even if it exists in the past, present or future, near or far…AntiQua manifests when we need it, every time we give in to dreams and forget about the daily grind. It is a goblet of wine in a candlelit tavern. It certainly did me a world of good, a brief trip to land governed by antique ideals of beauty and harmony. I hope it may accompany the quietest and sweetest moments of your existence as it has mine.”

THE BEST LAID PLANS...

For once, things have worked out really almost as I had planned them, which must be some kind of a first in my long and varied journalistic experience. I enjoy doing The Gonzo Weekly and I hope that you - the readership - enjoy it as much as I do.

The New Year is approaching, and with the new year comes a whole plethora of new opportunities and exciting things for those of us who inhabit the Gonzoverse. The traditional music business has come to an ignominious end, and Gonzo Weekly is part of a brave new world, where - bizarrely enough - there are more opportunities for artistic freedom than there ever were before, and some of the greatest music for decades is being recorded and released.

Coming soon will be more information about Corky Laing's intriguing new project - the opera about genetic manipulation. I have only heard one track so far, but as it sounds like Dr Dre channelling the spirit of Link Wray,  I cannot help but be massively impressed. I am going to see if I can get permission to share it with you all as a preview.

I also have a sneak preview of Alan Davey's new concept album coming up, and also an interview with Don Falcone of the massively groovy Spirits Burning.

There will also be news of the release of a fantastic treasure trove of classic performances from an early 1970s European festival, and, of course we have a whole slew of new releases coming from Michael Des Barres. It really doesn't get much better than this.

There is only one day left of 2012 - it has been a strange year, although a great one for music. If you didn't see it on Christmas Day, check out my top 10 (fifteen actually) records of the year. If you agree or disagree massively with my choices write in - I would love to hear from you.

Finally there is nothing left for me to do but to wish you all a peaceful and happy New Year.

Slainte

Jon
