Somé: Dyeing the Australian Environment

This month, our gallery pays homage to Australian flora and fauna through local artist Melinda Heal's textile exhibition called, 'Somé: Dyeing the Australian environment'. Somé refers to Japan's traditional dyeing techniques and form the distinct colour palette of Japanese textiles. The exhibition features works created using Japanese hand-dyeing techniques known as katazome and yuzen. Heal will also run postcard dyeing workshops as part of the exhibition. Exhibition starts August 15.

Free Film Screening
Discover one of director Kenji Mizoguchi's most heralded films, 'Street of Shame'. The film is a social commentary that tells the plight of five women who work in Tokyo's red light district at a time when Japan was debating the introduction of the 'Anti-Prostitution Bill'. Screens at our premises on August 23.

From late September, our gallery will showcase the artistry of traditional Japanese tattoos through a photographic exhibition, 'Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World'. This exhibition is part of a larger program to be announced next month. Stay tuned!
