The Board Bulletin January 2017

A Letter from USBA's President,
Nancy Kennedy

Happy January! A time for reflection and evaluation and the eternal optimism that comes with a fresh page. I love new calendars and date books, the feeling that I can do anything this year that I put my mind to. As I start to fill in the blank pages with activities and appointments, the year starts to take shape and a plan comes together for this new year 2017. I’ve already written in a goal to pace myself with the meals at the annual conference this week!  I’ve written in Jan. 23 and the start of the Legislative session. A busy time for all of us! We will be contacting you about important issues and information you can use to educate your local legislative members as to how their work affects ours. The session runs through Mar. 9th and already bills are filed that will have a dramatic impact on our work with children.

We’ve got three great opportunities for you to consider. Feb. 17th is the Day on the Hill, and the chance to talk and meet with state and local leaders as we all come together to attend meetings on Capitol Hill and express our support and concerns. We will also be asking each district to spend one day during the session on the hill with your Superintendent, Business Administrator, board members, and some teachers, to visit with your locally elected Legislative members, let them know your concerns and give you the chance to visit committee meetings, watch floor time, and see how it all comes together.

Leadership, Are You Ready to Lead?

I am frequently asked what qualities I see in a great leader.  Here are just a few of the qualities that I see:
  1. Great leaders demonstrate a force of character and are guided by a strong moral compass
  2. Great leaders are positive in word and deed, they exemplify it 24X7
  3. Great leaders are enthusiastic about every part of their life
  4. Great leaders are great listeners
  5. Great leaders open channels of communication

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

I trust you all have had a wonderful holiday season with your family friends. I am looking forward to spending time with all of you at our annual conference this week. I know we will have some amazing things happening there.
This past month we had our NSBA board meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi. Since this was my first time in Mississippi I was excited to get a flavor of the south with food, culture, and southern hospitality. I was not disappointed.

Safety Spotlight - Happy New Year

The USBA loss control team wants to wish all of you a happy and successful new year.

We are coming off of a very good 2016, claims were down and all of the hard work our districts have put into accident reduction efforts seems to be paying off.

As 2017 gets underway with a snowy bang let’s not rest on our laurels, please remember to clear walkways for staff to get safely into buildings. And in those areas that get little or no sunlight and the ice never seems to melt, maybe try placing cones or other markers to bring attention to these hazards.

Once again thank you all for the hard work of 2016 and our best wishes to you in 2017.
