The Board Bulletin March 2014

A Letter from USBA's President, Carolyn White

It was wonderful to see so many board members, superintendents, and business administrators at the “Day on the Hill.” It was a first time on the Hill for some and I hope that it was a learning experience. The work that is done with our legislators is so important in the molding and shaping of legislation.

I want to thank those that come to the Hill each week to serve on the Joint Legislative Committee; you are so dedicated to this cause. Many hours are spent by this committee, not only on Capitol Hill, but in their personal time studying the bills that might directly affect education.

Special thanks go to Patti Harrington for her relentless efforts to help the legislators understand the way their bills will either help or hinder public education. Kristi Swett, Mckell Withers, Peggy Jo Kennett, and JoDee Sundburg spend much time in these efforts as well; I appreciate their time and energy in our behalf.

I look forward to being with many of you each week as the Joint Legislative Committee meet. I am always in awe of the many great board members we have across this state.

As we stand as advocates for public education, let us never forget that the children of our state are the reason that we do what we do.

What Are the School Board Election Filing Dates and What Are the Financial Filing Requirements?

Eligibility for candidacy requires residency, voter registration, and non-employment.

Residency: The individual must have been a resident of the local school board district, which is that part of the school district which will elect the board member and which the board member will represent, at least one year before the election. (Utah Code § 20A-14-202(2)(a).) For the 2014 election, that date is November 4, 2013. This must be the primary residence. (Utah Code §20A-14-202(3)(b).)

Registered Voter: The individual must be a registered voter in the local school board district. (Utah Code § 20A-14-202(3)(a).) Only U.S. citizens may register to vote, and prior criminal convictions may disqualify an individual from registering to vote or holding office.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

The end of January and 1st of February brought the NSBA board of directors, officers and staff together for 5 full days of discussion, training, and advocacy. It was an amazing time working with such dedicated people across the country. There is an urgency to promote and advocate for all of the great things happening in and through public schools.

The message that we are sending out is that it is the time to, "Stand Up 4 Public Schools."  You will be seeing a great deal more about this nationally and there are many states who are also leading the way in asking all those who are involved in public schools, (parents, teachers, administrators, business leaders, etc...) to come together as a unified voice advocating for the many wonderful things happening in our public schools. This is an exciting direction.

MBA Corner - JoDee Sundberg

Here we are in March already, the year is flying by. This is a great month to come together as a board and look at things you might do this year to improve student achievement, discus how you can be better advocates for public education and reach out to your communities. Do you have a plan in place?

Because we are all required to complete an "Open Meeting Training" take the time now to get on PowerUp to complete this training.
