The Board Bulletin February 2017

A Letter from USBA's New President,
Nancy Tingey

It was wonderful to see many of you at the USBA Annual Conference a few weeks ago. Thank you for the support you give to this organization. As you know, most of the breakout sessions at the conference were presented by educators and board members from various Districts throughout Utah. I hope you gleaned valuable insights and enjoyed learning from the innovative, dedicated, and talented Utah professionals that shared their experiences with us. Thank you for attending and participating in the discussions. It was a great start to the year! I am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside Rick Ainge (Nebo), Mary Nielson (Juab), and Nancy Kennedy (Box Elder) as the 2017 officers for USBA.

This time of year, the elected Representatives and Senators gather to conduct the business of the State. In 45 long days and nearly 7 short weeks, laws are passed that affect many aspects of life in Utah. Diogenes Laertius, a biographer of the Greek Philosophers who lived in the 4th Century wrote, “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” Public Education commands the largest portion of the state budget, and a large number of proposed bills every Session. As I attend committee hearings and study legislation each year, I am impressed by the collective amount of effort and level of attention given to Public Education in Utah. A high quality and successful Public Education System is important!

What makes a great Board Member?
My answer, it takes experience and training. USBA offers multiple training opportunities for you and your Board. The Master Boards Award (MBA) is our professional development program, to learn more visit our website or call USBA at (801) 566-1207 anytime. We have two very recent tools to help you do your job even better, previously we announced the Board Key Performance Indicators (KPI) aka Board Self Evaluation and this year we announced the Superintendent Key Performance Indicators (KPI) aka Superintendent Evaluation. The credit for the work and creation of these two tools goes to the USBA Evaluation Development committee.

Thanks for your continued support, we look forward to another great year.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

Greetings from Washington D.C. As I write this article I have been in D.C. for nearly a week (January 25-31) participating in my NSBA board and committee work, equity symposium, and Advocacy Institute ending up on Capitol Hill. The city is a buzz with so many different thoughts and viewpoints and it truly is an amazing time to be on the political scene. We live in interesting times.
Last week I took a walk around DC and ended at the Washington Mall. It happened to be the same day and time as the Pro Life march. It was very interesting to see the signs, people, and clothing of this march comparatively to the march the week before. This is not a statement in support of either but just the noticeable difference in the participants and the presentation of their message. That is the beauty of democracy and the many viewpoints that allow us to have the freedoms we love. Civic engagement is part of what has made America great!

Safety Spotlight - Slips and Falls on Snow and Ice- The Beat Goes On

Recent newsletter articles have highlighted the hazards of navigating our way across surfaces that are covered in snow and ice. Despite all of the recent focus given to this topic, the falls have continued to occur on a daily basis. Yes, there are other safety related topics that I could cover, but none of them cross my desk every day, as this one does.

It has been a pretty harsh winter, yet we are only at the beginning of February. January and February are typically the most active claims months, as far as slips and falls on snow and ice are concerned. Based on the information we receive from these claims, and from being out there performing inspections, I would like to make a few observations and suggestions.
