The Board Bulletin August 2016

A Letter from USBA's New President,
Nancy Kennedy

It’s August and the Back to School sales are in full swing. The smell of new shoes and fresh crayons is intoxicating and kids everywhere are trying to get all those last activities packed into the remaining few weeks while moms are filling up schedules and planning new carpool routes. August is a time for new beginnings, fresh chances and getting back with old friends.  August is also a great time for each of us to review our progress in completing our MBA goals. The new school year is on our minds and there’s still lots of time to complete projects before the Dec. 1st deadline. I’ve really enjoyed working with the MBA program and taking the opportunity to work on areas of improvement that I need as a board member. I particularly like the “other” option in each of the 5 areas of emphasis, that gives me the chance to really focus on the things I think are important to me and my district.

One activity that’s been really helpful and fairly easy to do, is to read a book together as a board. I’ve done this for 3 years with my own board and now 2 years with the USBA Board of Directors. We usually read one chapter a month and then discuss it in a board meeting. We’ve chosen some very interesting material.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

For the past two weeks I have had the opportunity to attend the RNC in Cleveland and the DNC in Philadelphia. As the chair of NSBAC, the Action Center for legislative advocacy, I, along with the NSBAC staff, was able to host events at the conventions. Both events were dessert receptions with invitations going to delegates, school board members, or other elected officials who are advocates for public education. At both events we had a combined total of nearly 200 supporters including several congressional representatives. It was very exciting to visit together and discuss ways to support student learning and public schools from the local level to the national level. Four of our congress men and women currently serve on the Education Committee. Whether the Republican of Democratic Party we have great support for local governance, reauthorization of CTE with the Perkins bill, and correcting the issues with school lunch and child nutrition.

Safety Spotlight - Win by Losing

Not too long ago, we (USBA Loss Control) developed a poster, touting the benefits of wellness and of living a healthy lifestyle. Based on some recent trends and new information, I think it is wise to revisit some of the things discussed on that poster.

Obesity has become an epidemic! It is negatively influencing worker’s comp claims, as well as the quality of life of a large (and growing) percent of our school employees.
