The Board Bulletin August 2014

A Letter from USBA's President, Carolyn White

Fellow Board Members,

On July 17, 2014 Governor Gary Herbert called a press conference for the purpose of resolving divisive education issues. He promised to have legal experts review the process of the adoption of the Common Core Standards as well as educational experts from Utah evaluate the standards to make certain that they are in the best interest of our Utah children. The Governor also asked for parents, teachers, administrators, and other organizations to give feedback on the current standards and testing by going to utah.gov/governor/standards. I will include an attachment from the Governor’s office that could be distributed to the education community (click here to view the attachment).

On July 17, 2014 the State Board of Education met to decide whether they would extend the waiver to keep us out of No Child Left Behind. No decision was made that day but they will be meeting again on August 8, 2014 and the waiver will be on the agenda. It is extremely important to let your state board member know your feelings on this issue. It might be helpful as well to contact your local legislator and let them know your feelings.

This is a critical time for education in our state, we need to all be involved.

Thank you for all that you do.
