The Board Bulletin January 2015

A Letter from USBA's President, Carolyn White

The time has come to reflect on 2014, I cannot believe how fast the year has gone. It has given me much pleasure to be able to serve as the President of Utah School Boards Association and represent the USBA members across the State of Utah. The opportunity to serve in this capacity has helped me get to know many of you more personally and I count that a blessing. You are such good people to willingly serve your districts as board members and administrators. I have noticed, much more, the time and talents that exist in our public school leadership, thanks for your example.

Looking forward to the 2015 year that will bring new opportunities for me to be associated with the fine board members and administrators in Utah districts. The yearly USBA Conference is a time I look forward to with much fondness as I renew acquaintances with you. The conference provides great professional development and a time to strengthen our local boards. I hope to see all of you in Salt Lake City for our conference held on January 8th- 10th.

I will never forget the memorable experiences and great people while serving as your president, thanks for giving me this opportunity.

What Will I Find at the Annual Conference for Me?

I would like to welcome the 45 new school board members that were elected in November. I appreciated the opportunity to get acquainted with many of you at the New Board Member Workshop in December at the Provo Marriott.

I hope you at this Conference you will find a wealth of knowledge with General Session speakers, breakout sessions, and team building with your own Board, Superintendent, and Business Administrator and with other conference attendees. To our veteran board members you will find a lineup of high powered speakers and breakout sessions on current issues and timely topics.

NSBA News - JoDee Sundberg

January 2015 starts a new year with many exciting opportunities for local school board members with a lot of hard work and perseverance. Whether on the local, state, or national level we can make a difference - ordinary people doing extraordinary things. We must always remember that we are not a special interest group for public education but we have all been elected by our communities to lead out in public education decisions. We must keep ourselves informed and involved in the processes to help guide those decisions.

Loss Control Safety Spotlight - Avoiding Common Illness

Every year, most school employees will miss time at work, due to some type of illness. In schools and offices, we share close quarters, thus increasing the risk of transmitting an illness. Pre-existing conditions, such as asthma, heart conditions, etc… could complicate a common cold or flu.
